The Translation of Idiomatic Expressions in the TV series "The Big Bang Theory"

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá překladem idiomatických výrazů v populárním americkém seriálu Teorie velkého třesku. Cílem práce je komparativní analýza idiomatických výrazů v originálním znění a jejich překladu do českého dabingu. Práce je rozdělena na tří části - teoretická, praktická a didaktická. V teoretické části jsou představeny a definovány pojmy idiom a idiomatičnost stejně tak jsou zde představeny různé druhy idiomů a jejich následná kategorizace. Teoretická část se rovněž zabývá překladem a představuje strategie, které jsou použity pro překládání idiomů. Závěr této části je pak věnován samotnému americkému seriálu Teorie velkého třesku. Praktická část obsahuje analýzu idiomatických výrazů nalezených v prvních dvou sériích seriálu. Cílem je zjistit, zdali překlady v českém dabingu odpovídají výrazům v originálním anglickém znění. Celkem je zanalyzováno 174 výrazů, které jsou následně podle překladu zařazeny do odpovídající kategorie. Na základě analýzy je možno identifikovat, jaké strategie byly při překladu použity. Výsledky analýzy ukázaly, že nejčastější strategii překladu bylo použití idiomatického výrazu se podobným významem ale odlišnou formou. Tato strategie se vyskytuje v 50 % celkového počtu výrazů. Poslední částí této práce je část didaktická, ve které jsou představena různá cvičení, které ukazují, jak mohou být idiomy využity ve výuce slovní zásoby na základní škole.

Abstract:

This master's thesis deals with the translation of idiomatic expressions in the popular American series The Big Bang Theory. The aim of the work is to perform a comparative analysis of idiomatic expressions in the original language and their translation into Czech dubbing. The work is divided into three parts, theoretical, practical, and didactic. In the theoretical part, the terms idiom and idiomaticity are introduced and defined, as well as different types of idioms and their subsequent categorization. The theoretical part also deals with translation and presents strategies that are used for translating idioms. The conclusion of this part is dedicated to the American series The Big Bang Theory itself. The practical part contains an analysis of the idiomatic expressions found in the first two series of the series. The objective is to find out whether the translations in the Czech dubbing correspond to the expressions in the original English version. A total of 174 expressions are analysed, which are then classified into the corresponding category according to the translation. Based on the analysis, it is possible to identify which strategies were used during the translation. The results of the analysis showed that the most common translation strategy was the use of an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form. This strategy occurs in 50% of the total number of expressions. The last part of this thesis is the didactic part, in which various exercises are presented that show how idioms can be used in the teaching of vocabulary in primary school.
