Bedřich Feuerstein’s scenic architecture and the rise of a constructive aesthetic in the inter-war avant-garde theatre

Abstract:

Anotace. Tato práce je věnovaná otázce vlivu konstruktivismu na scénografii v období mezi dvěma válkami v Evropě a na jeho souvislost s architekturou. Pozornost je zaměřena na dílo české architekta a scénografa Bedřicha Feuersteina (1892-1936), který je považován za jednoho z iniciátorů české moderní scénografie a který ve své práci pro divadlo, již několik let před nástupem českého divadelního konstruktivismu, díky dokonalému propojení s ostatními složkami divadla , koncipoval jeviště jako architektonický útvar, složený do abstraktního celku s funkční dramatickou složkou. Těžiště této studie jeve shromáždění dostupných informací o účasti architektonické, resp. výtvarné složky na tvorbě konstruktivistické scény divadla a na základě zjištěných faktů dokazuji, že prvky, které užíval v architektuře se prosazovaly také v koncepcích visuální roviny jeho scénických návrhů, jsou nezaměnitelné, důsledně a promyšleně provázané s ostatním složkami dramatu , přičemž tvary, odvozené z geometrických těles, byly výtvarně zpracovány a podřízeny dramatické myšlence díla.

Abstract:

Anotace EN This work deals with scenographic works of the architect and fine artist Bedrich Feuerstein (1892-1936) in the context of European stage design development in the period between the two world wars. Bedřich Feuerstein is considered to be one of the initiators of the modern Czech scenography, though he himself regarded as his main mission his architectural output. In his stage designs, he applied his distinctive and unmistakable expression which he exhibited through different visual art techniques: painting, construction or graphics. He based his stage settings on the inner structure of plays and, thanks to the perfect interconnection of all components, he conceived the scene as an architectonic unit composing - together with a working dramatic component - an abstract whole. The purpose of this study is to gather all available information on the participation of Bedrich Feuerstein in theatre stagings and to modulate his development line. In my work, I also point out the possible relationship of some of his stage settings with constructivist techniques, e.g. the use of real materials on stage (R.U.R., glass) or his discovery of scenic object (Milenci z kiosku - Kiosk Lovers).
