The impact of patient movement artifacts on the quality of fMRI data

Abstract:

Funkční zobrazování pomocí magnetické rezonance (fMRI) je moderní vyšetřovací metoda používaná jak v neurovědním výzkumu tak i v klinických aplikacích (např. při plánování neurochirurgických výkonů). Důležitým faktorem, který ovlivňuje kvalitu naměřených dat, je pohyb pacienta během vyšetření. Pohybové artefakty se projevují zejména zhoršením poměru signál/šum a výskytem falešně pozitivních nebo negativních výsledků při statistickém zpracování fMRI dat. Byly použity data z 25 mladých a zdravých subjektů, při provádění blokového úkolu VFT (verbal fluency task). Data byla předzpracována 2 způsoby, s a bez procedury unwarp a pohyb byl zahrnut do statistického zpracování v podobě pohybových regresorů v design matrix. Cílem práce bylo zkoumání a kvantifikace vlivu pohybu na kvalitu fMRI dat a navržení kritéria pro kategorizaci fMRI dat jako vhodných či nevhodných k další analýze.

Abstract:

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a modern examination method used not only in neuroscientific research but also in clinical applications (e.g. in neurosurgical procedures planning). An important factor that affects the quality of measured data is the movement of the patient during the examination. Motion artifacts manifest in the deterioration of the SNR(signal to noise ratio) and in the occurence of false positive or false negative results after statistical processing of fMRI data. Data from 25 young and healthy subjects during block design experiment VFT (verbal fluency task) were used. The data were preprocessed in 2 ways, with and without unwarp procedure, motion was modelled during the statistical processing in form of motion regressors inserted into the design matrix. The aims of the thesis were studying and quantifying the influence of movement on the quality of fMRI data and proposal of the criteria for the categorization of fMRI data into groups as suitable or unsuitable for further analysis.
