Awakening in Equilibrium

Abstract:

Neoformalistická analýza filmu Equilibrium objevuje jeho dominantu v procitání, jež je možné sledovat jak v narativní části, tak i v mizanscéně a barevných tónech filmu. Práce ustavuje Equilibirum jako svébytné dílo, které sice čerpá, ale nikterak nekopíruje úspěšnější a známější klasiky sci-fi žánru. Toto vymezení vůči ostatním filmům žánru, a to zejména Matrixu, je sekundárním cílem práce. Equilibrium je v práci chápáno jak nedoceněný film, jehož kvalita byla zasťíněna Matrixem.

Abstract:

This neoformalist analysis of the film Equilibrium reveals awakening as the film’s dominant. Awakening can be perceived not only in the narrative, but also in the mise-en-scene and in the color tonality of the film. This work establishes Equilibirum as an idependent piece, which merely draws inspiration from – yet never copies – more successful and famous classics of the sci-fi genre. The establishment of the film’s independence in relation to other sci-fi films, particularly The Matrix, is this work’s secondary aim. This thesis perceives Equilibrium as an underrated film, whose qualities has been standing in the shadow of those of The Matrix.
