Differential and Difference Equations in Maple

Abstract:

V souladu s moderními trendy ve výuce matematiky, které s sebou přinesly informační technologie, našly v oblasti matematické analýzy největší uplatnění softwarové nástroje CAS - Computer Algebra System. Z těchto nástrojů je na Masarykově univerzitě nejvíce využívám program Maple. Přírodovědecká fakulta MU program Maple úspěšně využívá již od roku 1998, vznikla zde řada interaktivních výukových materiálů pro základní kurzy matematické analýzy. Podíl autora na jejich přípravě se stal prvním impulsem pro tuto disertační práci, neboť se ukázalo, že standardní nástroje systému Maple zdaleka nebudou dostačovat pro přípravu výukových materiálů k dalším partiím matematické analýzy. Předložená disertační práce je koncipována jako ucelená pomůcka, kterou lze využít jak při výuce matematické analýzy, tak při samostudiu či dílčích aplikovaných výpočtech (např. ve fyzice, aplikované matematice, ekonomii). Důraz je sice kladen i na odstranění rutinních kroků, ale celá práce je zaměřena didakticky, takže autor si dal mimo jiné za cíl odstranit tzv. "efekt černé skříňky", na který vyučující u systému Maple často upozorňují. Jednotlivé procedury jsou naprogramovány tak, aby se vizualizace výpočtů na obrazovce maximálně blížila postupu, který by bylo třeba provést na papíře. Vzhledem k této koncepci jsou kladeny nároky i na některé matematické znalosti uživatele. Práce je rozdělena do čtyř kapitol: 1. Mocninné řady, 2. Diferenciální rovnice, 3. Diferenční rovnice a obsahově odlišnou kapitolu 4. Webové aplikace. Je zřejmé, že cílem práce nebylo zpracovat téma po teoretické stránce ani vytvářet kvantitativně rozsáhlou sbírku příkladů. Naopak se zaměřujeme na široké využití systému Maple u daných témat matematické analýzy, proto byly vybrány typově různorodé úlohy, které je pak možno snadno zaměňovat u jednotlivých procedur. Po zhodnocení standardních nástrojů Maple a zmapování knihoven dostupných na internetu se ukázalo, že zejména kapitola první a třetí vyžadují podstatné rozšíření současných možností Maple. Můžeme konstatovat, že standardní knihovny implementované v Maple umožňují řešit jen základní úlohy, které dané partie matematické analýzy zahrnují, látku s nimi nelze zpracovat do hloubky a už vůbec ne didakticky. Zatímco v kapitole druhé bylo možné zpracovat téma Diferenciální rovnice částečně s využitím volně dostupné nadstandardní knihovny DEsol, ke kapitole první a třetí analogické knihovny v dostupných materiálech zcela chybí. Proto v rámci disertační práce byly vytvořeny dvě nové knihovny: knihovna pstools a retools. Knihovna pstools zahrnuje procedury k výpočtu poloměru konvergence mocninných řad psradius, k výpočtu oboru konvergence mocninných řad psconvergence a proceduru pstaylor k rozvoji funkcí do mocninných řad. Knihovna retools zahrnuje proceduru resolveCC k řešení diferenčních rovnic s konstantními koeficienty a proceduru retestCC k testování řešení diferenčních rovnic s konstantními koeficienty. Těžiště práce je v naprogramování vhodných procedur a vytvoření uživatelsky přístupného prostředí ve formě interaktivních webových aplikací, které umožňují okamžité využití při výuce. Jednotlivé části disertační práce byly v minulých letech již testovány v rámci výuky na Přírodovědecké fakultě a pozitivní ohlas studentů i vyučujících vedl k založení nového předmětu M3511 Matematická analýza 3 s programem Maple. V současné době jsou některé části disertační práce díky prezentaci na konferencích a webovému rozšíření využívány i dalšími univerzitami.

Abstract:

In agreement with modern trends in mathematics teaching, which have been brought by information technologies, for the field of mathematical analysis software tools CAS - Computer Algebra System – are used most frequently. Out of these tools, the Masaryk University mainly uses Maple. The Faculty of Science, MU, has been using the Maple software with success since 1998; a number of interactive learning materials for basic courses on mathematical analysis have been created here. The author’s cooperation in their preparation became the first impulse for this dissertation thesis, as it became obvious that the standard tools of the Maple system will not be sufficient for the preparation of learning materials for other parts of mathematical analysis. The presented dissertation thesis is designed as a complete aid that can be used both for teaching mathematical analysis and for self-study or partial applied calculations (e.g. in physics, applied mathematics, economy). Emphasis is placed on the removal of routine steps as well; however, the entire study is focused on teaching, therefore, the author, among others, aimed to remove the “black box effect”, which is often pointed out by teachers concerning Maple. Individual procedures are programmed so that the visualization of calculations on the screen closely resembles the procedure that would be necessary on paper. Thanks to this concept, the user also needs to have some mathematical knowledge. The thesis is divided into four chapters: 1. Power series, 2. Differential equations, 3. Difference equations and a chapter different in content 4.Web applications. It is obvious that the aim of the thesis was not to deal with a topic theoretically, neither to create a large collection of exercises. On the contrary, we have focused on a wide usage of the Maple system for the selected topics of mathematical analysis. Therefore, we have chosen tasks that are very different in type from each other and these can be then used for an easy exchange for individual procedures. The evaluation of Maple standard tools and a survey into libraries available on the Internet showed that mainly the first and the third chapters required a substantial expansion of current possibilities of Maple. We can say that the standard libraries implemented in Maple only allow users to solve basic tasks involved in the parts of mathematical analysis; the topic cannot be solved deeply, usage for teaching is even less possible. While in the second chapter, the topic Differential equations could be partially solved using the freely available extension library DEsol, analogical libraries for chapters one and three were missing completely. That is why two new libraries have been created within the framework of the dissertation thesis: library pstools and retools. Library pstools involves procedures for calculation of power series convergence radius psradius, calculation of power series convergence set psconvergence and procedure pstaylor for the development of functions into power series. Library retools especially involves procedure resolveCC to solve difference equations with constant coefficients and procedure retestCC to test the solution of difference equations with constant coefficients. The core of the thesis is the programming of suitable procedures and the creation of user-friendly interface in the form of interactive web applications which can be used during lessons. The separate parts of the dissertation thesis have been tested in recent years within lessons at the Faculty of Science and have been accepted very well by both students and teachers. This led to the establishment of a new subject M3511 Mathematical analysis 3 with Maple. Currently, thanks to its presentation at conferences and the web distribution, some parts of the dissertation thesis are used by other universities as well.
