The Impact of Overweight and Obesity on Adolescents' Self-concept

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou nadváhy a obezity v období adolescence a jejich vlivu na sebepojetí. V teoretických kapitolách jsou vymezeny hlavní oblasti zájmu (nadváha a obezita v adolescenci, konstrukt sebepojetí, význam období adolescence a teoretické zakotvení sebepojetí v sociálně kognitivním přístupu) a s nimi související výzkumy. Výzkumná studie se zaměřuje na sebepojetí jako postoj k sobě, který je tvořen třemi aspekty – kognitivním, emočním a konativním. V rámci těchto aspektů je porovnávána skupina adolescentů s nadměrnou hmotností a s vrstevníky s hmotností v normě. Celkem se výzkumu účastnilo 260 respondentů ve věku 11 – 19 let. Experimentální skupinu tvořilo 65 adolescentů s nadváhou či obezitou, kontrolní skupinu 195 adolescentů s hmotností v normě. Adolescentům byla předložena baterie 6 sebeposuzovacích škál (2 pro každý aspekt sebepojetí). Cílem studie bylo zjistit, zda má nadměrná hmotnost vliv na utváření sebepojetí v období adolescence, tedy zda se sebepojetí adolescentů s nadměrnou hmotností liší od sebepojetí adolescentů s hmotností v normě.

Abstract:

This Master's Thesis deals with a problem of overweight and obesity and its impact on self-concept in adolescence. Theoretical section of this thesis consists of overweight and obesity in adolescence, construct of self-concept, importance of adolescence, theoretical definition of self-concept in social-cognitive approach and related researches. Analytical part focuses on self-concept as an attitude towards oneself, which is composed of three aspects - cognitive, emotional and behavioral. From this point of view a group of adolescents with excess weight is compared with control group of adolescents with normal weight. The research included 260 respondents in the age range from 11 to 19 years. Experimental group was composed of 65 adolescents with overweight or obesity, control group consisted of 195 adolescents with normal weight. Adolescents were subjected to 6 questionnaires focused on their self-evaluation (2 for each aspect of self-concept). Main goal of this research was to examine if excess weight influences the conformation of self-concept in adolescence, in other words to ascertain if self-concept of adolescents with excess weight differs from adolescents with normal weight.
