Changing perceptions of students who fail to pass the upper secondary school leaving examination about their careers after leaving secondary education

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá neúspěšnými maturanty, konkrétně jejich měnícími se představami o jejich uplatnění. Tyto změny jsou zaznamenávány v několika časových momentech, a to při volbě střední školy, v průběhu studia na střední škole, během opravných pokusů a po střední škole. Cílem práce je zjistit, jak maturanti, kteří neuspěli u maturitní zkoušky v roce 2020, reflektují tento neúspěch a v závislosti s tím, jak se měnily ambice a představy ohledně jejich perspektivního uplatnění. Práce je složena z teoretické a empirické části. Empirická část byla zpracována pomocí kvalitativní analýzy sekundárních dat. Tyto individuální data pocházejí z projektu Životní dráhy neúspěšných maturantů a maturantek, realizovaným na Ústavu pedagogických věd na Masarykově univerzitě. Konkrétně se jednalo o 28 polostrukturovaných rozhovorů (7 respondentů, s každým proběhly 4 rozhovory), které jsem analyzovala pomocí otevřeného kódování. Hlavní zjištění souvisejícími s neúspěšnými maturanty a jejich měnícími se představami o jejich uplatnění, prezentuji v závěru práce.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis discusses about the unsuccessful high school graduates, specifically their changing ideas about their careers. These changes are recorded at several points, namely at the choice of high school, during studies at upper secondary school, during corrective attemps and studies of upper secondary school. The aim of the thesis is to find out how the high school graduates who failed the school leaving examination in 2020 reflect on this failure and depending on it, how their ambitions and ideas about their prospective careers have changed. The thesis consists of a theoretical and an empirical part. The empirical part was processed using qualitative analysis of secondary data. These individual data come from the Life paths of unsuccessful high school graduates project, implemented at the Department of Educational Sciences at Masaryk University. Specifically, there were 28 semi-structured interviews (7 respondents with 4 interviews each), which I analyzed using open coding. I present the main findings related to unsuccessful high school graduates and their changing ideas about their careers at the end of the thesis.
