Television viewer in the 21 century

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem práce je televizní divák v 21. století. Práce zjišťuje pomocí komparace ranného televizního věku a současného stavu, jak se změnilo prostředí televizního vysílání a jak se proměnila instituce televizního diváctví, zejména z hlediska míry aktivity během sledování televize. Práce se opírá o texty a tvrzení teoretiků, zabývajících se televizí a novými médii. V počátku popisuje okolnosti vzniku televize, vznik a základní rozdělení televizních stanic a stav v období ranného televizního věku (zejména období 50. let.) a v dalších částech toto období porovnává se současným stavem, přičemž uvádím příklady zejména z televizních trhů USA a Velké Británie. Do těchto období jsou dále aplikovány tendence a chování diváků během sledování televizního vysílání, typologie televizních diváků, která je převážně odvozena z typologie publik. V závěrečné části práce jsou shrnuty poznatky z jednotlivých kapitol a popsána charakteristika televizního diváka v 21. století.

Abstract:

The main topic of the thesis is the 21st century TV viewer. Comparing the early television age with the current situation, the thesis aims to establish how the television broadcasting environment changed and the institution of television viewer ship transformed, especially in terms of activity while watching television. The thesis is based on texts and claims of the theorists focusing on the television and new media. In the first chapters, the thesis describes circumstances of the television origins, formation and a basic classification of television channels as well as the situation in the early television age (particularly in the 1950s). The following parts of the thesis contain a comparison of the aforementioned period with the current situation presenting examples from the television markets of the USA and Great Britain. Furthermore, within the two observed periods, the trends and behaviour of the viewers while watching television, and the viewers typology based mainly on the typology of audiences in general are applied. The final part of the thesis includes findings from each chapter and characteristics of the 21st century TV viewer.
