The Theory of Personal and Moral Identity in Contemporary Analytical Philosophy

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce mapuje a analyzuje linie diskuzí týkající se tématu osobní morální identity. Přičemž autorka práce se bude soustředit na vybrané filosofy působící v rámci současné analytické filosofie. Po úvodním nástinu filosofického základního pojmu osobní identity si autorka nejprve povšimne problematičnosti tématu jáství. Práce se ovšem bude týkat především faktu, že v oblasti současné analytické etiky se osobní identita stala jedním z klíčových konceptů. Ačkoli jsou morální hodnoty a principy objektivně platnými přinejmenším v tom smyslu, že nejsou zcela arbitrární, je na druhé straně pro autentický etický život třeba nalézat svůj hodnotový systém jako cosi vlastního, tedy subjektivního, co tvoří naši osobní identitu. Tématu této "subjektivizace" v pojetí Charlese Taylora se studentka dotkla již ve své bakalářské práci. Bohatství podnětů se však dnes v tomto směru vyskytuje u řady dalších myslitelů anglofonního světa. O nalézání či utváření morální identity jednotlivce hovořil H. Frankfurt: určité tužby či zaměření vůle jsou podstatné pro to, čím my sami jsme. Téma je rozpracováno též u D. Vellemana či u Ch. Korsgaard, jež podtrhuje normativní povahu osobní identity. Pojem morální identity je v současnosti dále rozvíjen zejména teorií tzv. narativní identity (K. Atkins), podle které jsou rozdílné etapy naší morální identity sjednoceny smysluplností příběhu našeho života jako celku. V závěru se na tomto základě autorka pokusí zhodnotit význam formování etického kodexu jedince a dospět k potřebné diferenciaci pojmu identity.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis follows the way of discussions concerning the concept of personal identity, and analyses these. Whereas the author will focus on selected philosophers working within the analytical philosophy sphere. Firstly, the basic philosophical notion of personal identity will be introduced. Right after the problems, that can arise when discussing personal identity and selfhood will be briefly discussed. The main focus of the thesis, however, will be on the fact, that the notion of personal identity has become a pivotal concept within the field of analytical ethics. Although moral values and principles are objectively valid as they are not entirely arbitrary, it is absolutely crucial to take these moral principles and values as something subjective, our very own. Only this way we can truly experience an authentic moral life. The topic of this "subjectification" was talked upon in the author's bachelor thesis (Charles Taylor's Metaethics). Nonetheless, a number of instigations can be found in works of many philosophers from around the English speaking world. H. Frankfurt speaks about finding and forming of moral identity: certain desires or aspirations are important for who we are. This topic is also developed by D. Velleman or Ch. Korsgaard, who emphasises normative character of personal identity. The notion of moral identity is currently further developed through the theory of narrative identity (K. Atkins), according to which different stages of our life are interconnected by a narrative about our life as a meaningful whole. In the final conclusion, the author will try to evaluate the significance of the individual's ethical codex formation and to reach the final point: a needed differentiation of the notion of personal identity.
