Abstract:

Bakalářská práce “Popular English Phrases: Meaning, Origin and Use” se zabývá porovnáním frází a přísloví v anglickém a českém jazyce. Předmětem teoretické části je vymezení pojmů fráze a přísloví a zdůvodnění, proč je tolik frází, které jsou mluvčími oblíbené, v obou jazycích podobných. Dále zdůrazňuje důležitost osvojování a používání těchto výrazů v angličtině u osob, pro které je cizím jazykem, protože slouží jako ukazatel úrovně znalosti cizího jazyka. Je poukázáno na různé úrovně idiomatičnosti těchto frází a přísloví, které ovlivňují schopnost odhadnout jejich význam bez znalosti jejich původu. Je také zdůrazněna ustálenost těchto výrazů ve vztahu k jejich používání u cizích mluvčích. Praktická část této práce rozděluje jednotlivé fráze a přísloví podle oblastí, ze kterých původně pocházejí. Anglické a české verze fráze jsou porovnány ve smyslu významu, který ve dnešní době mají, pokud se liší od původního, a je srovnáno jejich používání v obou jazycích. U většiny frází a přísloví je citován konkrétní příklad jejich užití v angličtině.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis “Popular English Phrases: Meaning, Origin and Use” deals with the comparison of phrases and proverbs in the English and Czech languages. The theoretical part deals with the definition of the terms phrase and proverb and gives reasons why so many phrases, that are popular by speakers, are similar in both languages. Further it emphasizes the importance of acquiring and use of these expressions in English by people, for whom it is a foreign language, because it serves as the indicator of the level of fluency in the language. Different levels of idiomaticity of these phrases and proverbs, that influence the ability of guessing their meaning without the knowledge of their origin, are pointed out. The fixedness of these expressions concerning their use by foreign speakers is also stressed. The practical part of this thesis divides individual phrases and proverbs according to the areas that they originally come from. English and Czech phrases are compared in accordance to the meaning that they have nowadays, if it is different to the original one, and their use in both languages is compared. In most cases concrete examples of their use in English is quoted.
