Aestheticism, Decadence and Irishness in Oscar Wilde's Fairy Tales in the Context of his Essays and Lectures

Anotace:

Tato práce si klade za cíl porovnat sbírky pohádek Oscara Wilda „Šťastný princ a jiné pohádky“ z roku 1888, „Dům granátových jablek“ z roku 1891 a jeho eseje a přednášky jmenovitě „Úpadek lhaní", „Kritik jako umělec" a „Lidská duše za socialismu" z hlediska aspektů estetismu, fin de siècle dekadence a irského odkazu. Práce navíc zkoumá původ a kontext daných motivů. Pro účely této práce je analyzováno pět pohádek, jmenovitě „Sobecký obr“, „Rybář a jeho duše“, „Šťastný princ“, „Mladý král“ a „Slavík a růže“. Analýza má za cíl prokázat, že se v nich odráží Wildův estetismus i politické názory, tak jak jsou popsány v jeho esejích. Výše uvedená díla byla publikována mezi lety 1886 a 1891. Přibližně ve stejné době Oscar Wilde vydal svůj jediný román, Obraz Doriana Graye (1890), který je považován za manifest literární dekadence fin de siècle, což učinilo jeho autora lídrem anglické dekadentní tradice. Tato práce zkoumá, jak estét Oscar Wilde chápal koncept literární dekadence a estetismu, a zda jeho pohádky a eseje tyto koncepty odrážejí. Wilde byl inspirován francouzskou dekadencí i anglickým estetismem. Tato práce by však byla neúplná, pokud by ignorovala Wildovu kritiku viktoriánské společnosti. Wilde často zesměšňoval viktoriánskou vyšší střední třídu, zároveň však měl pochopení pro utlačované menšiny. Někteří akademici věří, že Wildova kritika viktoriánské společnosti vyplývá z jeho pozice outsidera irského původu, který byl zároveň přijímán a akceptován společností, kterou kritizoval. Tato diplomová práce se proto snaží přiblížit jeho kritiku viktoriánské společnosti v jeho eseji a pohádkách, S ohledem na skutečnost, že pohádky Oscara Wilda byly akademiky často ignorovány a považovány za anomální, ve srovnání se zbytkem jeho literární činnosti, chce tato práce prokázat, že výše uvedené pohádky odrážejí jak jeho estetismus, tak jeho politické názory, z čehož plyne, že myšlenka anomality je nepodložená.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to compare the aspects of aestheticism, fin de siècle decadence and Irishness in Oscar Wilde’s collections of fairy tales, The Happy Prince and Other Tales (1888) and A House of Pomegranates (1891), with those his essays and lectures, namely, “The Decay of Lying”, “The Critic as Artist” and “The Soul of Man under Socialism”. This thesis examines the articulation of the motives, their origin and the context. For the purposes of this thesis is analysed five fairy tales, namely, “The Selfish Giant”, “The Fisherman and his Soul”, “The Happy Prince”, “The Young King” and “The Nightingale and the Rose”, with aim to prove that they reflect Wilde’s aesthetic and political views as described in his essays. The above-mentioned works were first published at the turn of the decade, between 1886 and 1891. At about the same time, Oscar Wilde published his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Grey, in 1890, which is considered to be a manifesto of fin de siècle literary decadence, and which makes its creator central to the English decadent tradition. This thesis explores how Oscar Wilde, the aesthete, understood and saw the concept of decadence and aestheticism, and whether his fairy tales and essays reflect these concepts. Wilde was inspired by French decadence and English aestheticism. However, this thesis would be incomplete if it ignored Wilde’s criticism of Victorian society. He often mocked the Victorian upper middle class. At the same time, he had an understanding of those who were marginalised. Some academics believe that Wilde’s critique of Victorian society stems from his unique position of being an outsider, being of Irish origin, while, at the same time, being in a close proximity to, familiar with, even accepted as a part of, the society that he challenged. This thesis thus sets out to examine Oscar Wilde’s critique of Victorian society in his essays and fairy tales, In the light of the fact that his fairy tales have often been ignored, or marginalised in Wilde Studies, and are considered anomalous to the rest of his work, this thesis has set out to prove that Oscar Wilde’s fairy tales reflect and support his aesthetic doctrine and political views, and demonstrate that the assumption they are anomalous to the rest of his work, is baseless.
