Zr-Al-O and Zr-Si-O coatings with resistance against cracking

Abstract:

Vrstvy ZrAlO a ZrSiO s různým poměrem prvků Zr/Al a Zr/Si byly reaktivně deponovány pomocí AC magnetronového naprašování na vyhřívané, ale i nevyhřívané křemíkové, skleněné a molybdenové substráty s cílem nalézt a připravit vrstvy, které by kombinovaly vysokou tvrdost a odolnost proti vzniku trhlin. U všech sérií vrstev byla stanovena hustota, depoziční rychlost, mechanické a optické vlastnosti, transmitance a (u vrstev se strukturou tZrO2) teplotní stabilita. Bylo ukázáno, že vrstvy ZrAlO s poměrem Zr/Al 2,3 připravené při pO2 0,1 Pa vykazovaly při ohybovém testu transmitanci T > 70 % a odolnost proti vzniku trhlin. Dále tyto vrstvy vykazovaly např. vysokou tvrdost H 18 GPa, efektivní Youngův modul pružnosti E* 150 GPa, vysokou elastickou vratnost We > 70 % a ve struktuře fázi tZrO2. Následující změna poměru Zr/Al 0,3 při pO2 0,07 Pa vedla k přípravě amorfních vrstev, které vykazovaly trhliny při ohybovém testu. Vzájemným porovnáním mechanických vlastností a odolností vrstev proti vzniku trhlin byla stanovena klíčová hodnota parametru H/E*. Pokud vrstvy ZrAlO vykazovaly hodnotu poměru H/E* 0,1, pak tyto vrstvy také vykazovaly odolnost proti vzniku trhlin. Tato teze byla zopakována a potvrzena i pro vrstvy ZrSiO,to znamená, že vrstvy ZrSiO s poměrem H/E* 0,1 vykazovaly opět odolnost proti vzniku trhlin při ohybovém testu, a to jak pro krystalickou, tak i pro amorfní strukturu. Dále byl zkoumán vliv pnutí ve vrstvách a multivrstvách na odolnost vrstev proti vzniku trhlin. Součástí tohoto experimentu byla příprava ochranné vrstvy, která zabránila tvorbě trhlin v křehké vrstvě. V neposlední řadě byl např. zkoumán vliv odolnosti vrstev proti vzniku trhlin na jejich tloušťce.

Abstract:

ZrAlO and ZrSiO coatings with various elemental composition ratios Zr/Al and Zr/Si were reactively deposited by AC magnetron sputtering on to heated and unheated silicon, glass and molybdenum substrates with the aim to find and prepare coatings, that can combine the high hardness and resistance against formation of cracks. In each series of the coatings the density, deposition rate, mechanical and optical properties, stabilization of transition mode of reactive sputtering, and (in the coatings, which exhibited tZrO2 structure) thermal stability were determined. It has been shown, that ZrAlO coatings with ratio Zr/Al 2,3 prepared at pO2 0,1 Pa exhibited transmittance T > 70 % and resistance against formation of cracks during the bending test. Moreover, these coatings exhibited e.g. high hardness H 18 GPa, effective Young´s modulus E* 150 GPa, high elastic recovery We > 70 % and tZrO2 phase in their structure. The subsequent change of ratio Zr/Al 0,3 at pO2 0,07 Pa led to preparation of the amorphous coatings, which exhibited cracks in the bend test. By means of comparison of the mechanical properties and resistance of the coatings against formation of cracks the crucial value of parameter H/E* was determined. If the coatings exhibited the value of ratio H/E* 0,1, then the coating also exhibited resistance against cracking. This thesis was also repeated and confirmed for ZrSiO coatings, it means, the ZrSiO coatings with ratio H/E* 0,1 exhibited the resistance against formation of cracks during the bend test for amorphous and also for crystalline structure. Moreover, the influence of stress of the coatings and multi-coatings on the resistance against cracking was examined. A part of this experiment was the preparation of protection coating, that would prevent the formation of cracks in brittle coatings. Last but not least the dependence of resistance against cracking on the coatings thickness was examined.
