Use of price elasticity of demand in beer sales

Abstract:

Diplomová práce pomocí regresní analýzy sestavuje funkci poptávky po pivu modelové samoobsluhy ve Frýdku-Místku a vypočítává koeficient cenové elasticity této poptávky (následně také důchodové elasticity a křížové elasticity poptávky). Data modelové samoobsluhy byla odvozena z celorepublikových hodnot poskytnutých Českým statistickým úřadem. Na základě těchto dat je spočítána cenová elasticita poptávky po pivu v hodnotě -0,184, jedná se tedy o běžný statek s neelastickou poptávkou. Pivo na základě těchto modelových dat tedy není vhodným statkem k zařazení do slevové akce, je naopak smysluplné uvažovat o navyšování ceny za účelem zvyšování celkových tržeb. Dále výpočty ukazují, že pivo prodávané v této samoobsluze je normálním nezbytným statkem (důchodová elasticita ve výši 0,442) a že vůči cigaretám se jedná o komplement (křížová elasticita -0,25). Tyto výsledky jsou velmi závislé na datech dané samoobsluhy nebo jiného podniku.

Abstract:

Using a regression analysis, the diploma thesis compiles the function of the demand for beer of the model grocery store in Frýdek-Místek and calculates the coefficient of price elasticity of this demand (subsequently also income elasticity and cross elasticity of demand). The data of the model grocery store were derived from the nationwide values provided by the Czech Statistical Office. Based on these data, the price elasticity of demand for beer in the amount of -0.184 is calculated, so it is an ordinary good with inelastic demand. Based on these model data, beer is therefore not a suitable product to be included in the discount offer; on the contrary, it is reasonable to consider increasing the price in order to increase total sales. Furthermore, the calculations show that the beer sold in this model grocery store is a normal necessity good (income elasticity of 0.442) and that it is a complement to cigarettes (cross elasticity -0.25). These results are highly dependent on the data of a given supermarket or other company.
