Representation of the Uncanny in Fictional Literature

Abstract:

Předmětem této studie je hledání ukázek „uncanny“ (podivné, tajuplné, zlověstné, mysteriózní, známé a současně neznámé) v literatuře, která je hlavním předmětem zkoumání této magisterské práce. Další část se zaobírá „uncanny“ ve vizuálních médiích a část práce se zabývá „uncanny“ v reálném životě a kulturních událostech. Tato práce si klade za cíl ukázat, že v rozhodování jestli je objekt „uncanny“ hraje hlavní roli neurčitost a nejistota. Předmětem první, literární části, je „uncanny“ v Gotické fiktivní literatuře, předmětem druhé části jsou vizuální média a jsou zde zahrnuty sci-fi a hororové a třetí část obsahuje okamžiky „uncanny“ ze skutečného života, kulturních událostí a mých vlastních zážitků „uncanny“ ve skutečnosti (dále také jak se „uncanny“ vytváří tmou, epilepsií, voskovými figurínami, znetvořenými lidmi, hračkami, loutkami, počítačovými hrami a fotomontážemi). Účelem této studie je ukázat, že „uncanny“ je jeden z nejsilnějších prožitků strachu – dalo by se říci až archetypální strach, ne-li ten úplně nejsilnější známý strach.

Abstract:

This study is an attempt to address the issue of the uncanny in literature, which is the main subject to research in the thesis. The rest concerns the uncanny in visual media and part of the thesis is devoted to the uncanny in reality and cultural events. The study shows that undecideability and uncertainty about the object viewed is the basic factor in claiming the object to be uncanny. The first, literal part, focuses mainly on the uncanny in Gothic fictional literature, the second part deals with visual media, seeks to establish which objects are uncanny and how the uncanny is used to incite fear in sci-fi and horror movies and the third, transitional part, situated between literature and movies concerns real life occurences and incorporates uncanny in reality, cultural events and my own insights and experiences of the uncanny from real life. It is demonstrated how the uncanny is incited in darkness, by wax figures, epilepsy, mutilated people, toys, puppets, computer games and photomontages. The purpose of the thesis is to show that the uncanny is one of the greatest sources – one may say archetypal source of fear, if not the greatest fear that one can experience.
