Multiword lexical units with transferred meaning in English and Czech (proverbs, similes and sayings)

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá víceslovnými lexikálními jednotkami s přeneseným významem v angličtině a češtině. Zaměřuje se především na přísloví, přirovnání a pořekadla. V teoretické části jsou víceslovné lexikální jednotky definovány společně s pojmy, které s nimi souvisí. V praktické části jsou příklady jednotlivých víceslovných lexikálních jednotek analyzovány a výsledky zaneseny do tabulek. Cílem práce je zjistit, do jaké míry se jednotlivé jednotky liší v anglickém a českém jazyce. Anglické příklady byly analyzovány a rozděleny do kategorií podle podobnosti s jejich českými protějšky. Výsledky rozboru ukazují, že téměř jednu třetinu vybraných vzorků lze doslova přeložit z anglického do českého jazyka.

Abstract:

This undergraduate thesis deals with multiword lexical units with transferred meaning. It is especially focused on proverbs, similes and sayings. In the theoretical part individual multiword lexical units are described as well as terms that are connected to the topic. In the practical part the examples of individual multiword lexical units are analyzed. The samples of individual types of multiword lexical units are divided into three categories according to their similarity in both languages. They are then further divided into subcategories according to their syntactic structure (proverbs) or lexical means they use (similes and sayings). The results of the analysis show that almost one third of the analyzed English samples are the exact equivalents of the Czech ones. The rest of the English samples either slightly differs from the Czech ones or is completely different.
