The Comparative Analysis of Jacques Cazotte's, Théophile Gautier's and Prosper Mérimée's Fantastic Tales

Abstract:

The topic of this master thesis is the analysis and comparison of fantastic short stories by three French authors of the 18th and especially the 19th century: Jacques Cazotte, Théophile Gautier and Prosper Mérimée. It is divided into two basic parts. The introduction to the theoretical part outlines several main approaches to the definition of the fantastic. The second chapter treats the morphological structure and typology of the characters of the fantastic story. The next chapter discusses the approach of the narrative perspective, i.e. the concept of the narrator, the mediation of the thinking of the characters, the focalization, but also the time and space, with emphasis on the specifics of fantastic literature. The analytical comparative part draws on this theoretical basis. It is further complemented by the concept of narrative ambivalence, which is what creates the basic building block of fantastic short stories. The introductory chapter of the analytical part presents selected authors and their works with emphasis on capturing the narrative functions in ten selected fantastic short stories. Their analysis became the starting point of the second part, which describes and compares in what ways the fantastic manifests itself with the mentioned authors. The aim is to not only highlight the similarities but also, and especially, the differences of their approaches to inserting a fantastic element into the story. Although Mérimée's strategy is quite different from that of Cazotte and Gautier, the three of them all create a plausible and believable fantastic story.

Tématem diplomové práce je analýza a srovnání fantastických povídek tří francouzských autorů 18. a zejména 19. století: Jacquesa Cazotta, Théophila Gautiera a Prospera Mériméea. Je rozvržena do dvou základních částí. Úvod teoretické části se věnuje představení několika hlavních přístupů k definici fantastična. Druhá kapitola pojednává o morfologické struktuře a typologii postav fantastické povídky. Následující kapitola se zabývá přiblížením narativní perspektivy, tzn. pojetí vypravěče, zprostředkování myšlení postav, fokalizace, ale i času a prostoru s vyzdvihnutím specifik fantastické literatury. Na tomto teoretickém základě je postavena analytická srovnávací část, která je dále doplněna o pojem narativní ambivalence tvořící základní stavební kámen fantastických povídek. Úvodní kapitola analytické části představuje vybrané autory a jejich díla s důrazem na postihnutí narativních funkcí u vybraných deseti fantastických povídek. Jejich rozbor se stal východiskem analytické části, která popisuje a srovnává, jakým způsobem se fantastično u zmíněných autorů vyjevuje, s cílem vyzdvihnout nejen podobnosti, ale zejména odlišnosti jejich přístupů k zasazení fantastického prvku do děje příběhu. Přestože je tato strategie u Mériméea značně odlišná od Cazotta a Gautiera, všichni tři shodně vytvářejí pravděpodobný a uvěřitelný fantastický příběh.
