Greco-Roman Mythology and History in the Graphic Work of Josef Bergler

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá výběrem dvaceti osmi grafik Josefa Berglera. Díla spojuje téma řecké a římské mytologie, z nichž čtyři díla jsou příklady grafického zhotovení témat starověké historie. Každý grafický list je interpretován z hlediska ikonografického určení postav, tématu a z hlediska přiblížení příběhů, z nichž scéna grafiky pochází. Grafiky jsou nadále srovnávány s uvedenými obrazy a grafickými listy dalších umělců pro zjištění přijatelných uměleckých vlivů, ze kterých mohl Josef Bergler vycházet.

Abstract:

The submitted bachelor's diploma thesis deals with a selection of twenty-eight of Joseph Bergler’s engravings. The graphic sheets are connected by the theme of Greek and Roman mythology, of which four prints are examples of graphic representations of themes from ancient history. Each graphic sheet is interpreted from the point of view of the iconographic determination of the characters, the theme, and the approximation of the stories from which the print’s scene originates. Next are the gprahic sheets compared with the paintings and prints by other artists to determine the acceptable artistic influence that Joseph Bergler may have based on.
