Storytelling in ESL In Czech Lower Secondary Schools

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce zkoumá využití storytellingu jako výukové metody v rámci výuky angličtiny jako druhého jazyka na českých základních školách. Cílem této výzkumné práce je získat pochopení o aplikaci a účincích této metody na rozvoj mezikulturní komunikační kompetence (ICC) v angličtině u českých žáků základních škol. Jedná se o vícečetnou případovou studii, ve níž byly pozorovány vyučovací hodiny anglického jazyka tří učitelů v celkem šesti různých skupinách žáků. Výsledky ukazují, že učitelé preferují takové aktivity, které staví na žákovi jako tvůrci příběhu, převážně ve formě psaného projevu. Toto se liší od recenzované literatury, ve které jsou převažující příběhy prezentovány učitelem. Všichni tři učitelé vidí storytelling jako účinnou výukovou metodu se širokým spektrem možných aplikací. Současně souhlasí, že storytelling musí být přizpůsoben různým výukovým podmínkám, jako je úroveň angličtiny, čas na přípravu a školní učební plán. Žádný z učitelů však nezmiňuje rozvoj ICC jako svůj motiv pro začlenění storytellingu do výuky. Pokud jde o žáky, metoda byla vnímána převážně pozitivně, s několika výjimkami. Někteří žáci tvrdili, že pro ně storytelling postrádá jakoukoli užitečnost nebo že je aktivity spojené s touto metodou vůbec nelákají. Většina žáků také není přesvědčena o účinnosti storytellingu jako metody pro získávání nových znalostí. Naopak, storytelling vnímají spíše jako nástroj pro opakování, nikoliv pro "učení". Někteří žáci také vyjádřili preferenci ke cvičením v učebnicích, oproti storytellingu. Tento postoj žáků ke storytellingu se liší od dosavadního výzkumu na toto téma. Podle tvrzení učitelů mají žáci problém s některými aktivitami spojenými se storytellingem, protože nejsou zvyklí na úkoly, které vyžadují nezávislou tvůrčí činnost a kritické myšlení, což připisují nedostatkům českého vzdělávacího systému.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis explores the usage of storytelling as a teaching method within the context of ESL classes in Czech lower secondary schools. The objective of this research is to gain insight into the appli-cation and effects of said method on the development of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) in English of Czech lower secondary school students. It is a multiple case-study, in which three teachers with six total different groups were observed and interviewed. The results show an inclination of teachers towards storytelling activities which rely on the student as the creator of a narrative, primarily in the written form. This is in contrast with the reviewed literature, in which stories presented by the teacher are more prevalent. The three teach-ers see storytelling as an effective teaching method with a wide variety of possible applications. They also agree that storytelling needs to be adjusted depending on various teaching circumstances, such as the level of English, time for preparation and the school curriculum. None of the teachers; however, mention ICC development as their motivator for inclusion of storytelling in classes. As for the learners, the method was generally well perceived, with several notable exceptions. Some learners expressed that to them storytelling lacked any utility or that it had no appeal whatsoever. It was also noted that majority of the learners did not view storytelling as an effective method of new knowledge acquisition. Instead, they viewed it as more of a tool for revision, rather than “learning”. This notion was highlighted by some learners’ expressed preference to textbook exercises, as opposed to storytelling activities. In this regard, the learners’ attitude towards sto-rytelling is in opposition to the reviewed research on the topic. Accord-ing to the teachers, many of their learners struggle with some storytell-ing activities, as they are not used to tasks which require independent creativity and critical thinking, which they attribute to inadequacies in the Czech system of education.
