The relationship between parental conflict and quality of sibling relationships in emerging adulthood

Abstract:

Tato práce je zaměřena na souvislost mezi rodičovským konfliktem a kvalitou vztahu mezi sourozenci v období vynořující se dospělosti. Cílem této studie bylo ověřit vztah mezi rodičovským konfliktem a sourozeneckou vřelostí, důvěrou, sourozeneckým konfliktem a percipovanou podporou od sourozence. Dále byly ověřeny rozdíly v kvalitě sourozeneckých vztahů mezi respondenty z rozvedených a nerozvedených rodin. V přehledové části jsou charakterizovány sourozenecké vztahy a jejich význam pro člověka, teoretické koncepty týkající se vlivu rodičovského konfliktu na dětskou maladaptaci a předchozí empirická zjištění týkající se souvislosti rodičovského konfliktu s kvalitou vztahu mezi sourozenci. Ve výzkumné části byly použity následující metody: Adult Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (ASRQ), Dyadic Trust Scale a Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale (Škála dětské percepce konfliktu mezi rodiči, CPIC). V empirické části práce jsou představeny výsledky výzkumu. Byla prokázána souvislost mezi vlastnostmi rodičovského konfliktu a sourozeneckým konfliktem, dále mezi celkovou konfliktovostí vztahu mezi rodiči a sourozeneckou vřelostí a důvěrou a v neposlední řadě mezi účinností zvládání rodičovského konfliktu a percipovanou podporou od sourozence. Nebyly nalezeny žádné rozdíly v kvalitě sourozeneckých vztahů mezi respondenty z rozvedených a nerozvedených rodin. Tyto výsledky byly porovnány s teoretickými východisky a předchozími empirickými zjištěními.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the relationship between parental conflict and quality of sibling relationships in emerging adulthood. The aim of this study was to verify the relationship between parental conflict and sibling warmth, trust, conflict and perceived support. There were also verified differences in the quality of sibling relationships between respondents from divorced and intact families. In overview, there are characterized sibling relationships and their meaning for people, theoretical concepts regarding the impact of parental conflict on children’s maladjustment and previous empirical findings on the relation between parental conflict and quality of sibling relationships. In the study, there were used following methods: Adult Sibling Relationship Questionnaire (ASRQ), Dyadic Trust Scale and Children’s Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale (CPIC). In the empirical part of the thesis, there are presented the results of present research. The results showed significant links between properties of parental conflict and sibling conflict, also between overall parental conflict and sibling warmth and trust, and finally, between coping efficacy of parental conflict and perceived support from sibling. There were no significant differences in the quality of sibling relationships between respondents from divorced and intact families. These results were compared with theory and previous empirical findings.
