The optimal capital structure of a company in the field of services

Abstract:

This dissertation focuses on the investigation of the optimal capital structure of the selected company. The purpose of this thesis is to determine the optimal capital structure of the company and to suggest possible improvements. The theoretical part explains the basic concepts that are related to the topic. Of this, the first half defines terms concerning the company’s operation. The second half describes the issue of optimal capital structure, where the focus is mainly on the cost of equity and debt. The cost of capital is interpreted with the help of WACC indicator and the cost of equity is shown with the use of the CAPM model. By applying theoretical knowledge to the financial analysis, it is concluded that the selected company achieved unsatisfactory values in the area of liquidity and liability. The company’s debt is at 69%, what means it ranges around critical values. The WACC shows that the average cost of capital is 5.87%. After calculating the interest rate coverage indicator, it shows that the company is currently able to pay its interest approximately 480 times. The indifference curve shows that the EBIT is below the indifference point and this suggests that the company should not increase the share of external resources as, at this time, this could have a negative impact on their profitability. The part that focuses on recommendations contains all the knowledge gained working on this thesis. At the same time the focus is also on proposal of changes that would lead to optimization of capital structure. The most appropriate solution for the company is to reduce the share of external resources to 50%, which would achieve lower average cost of capital.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá hľadaním optimálnej kapitálovej štruktúry vybraného podniku. Cieľom práce je stanoviť optimálnu kapitálovú štruktúru a navrhnúť možnosti jej zlepšenia. V teoretickej časti mojej diplomovej práce som vymedzila a následne vysvetlila základné pojmy, ktoré súvisia s danou témou. V prvej časti definujem pojmy týkajúce sa podniku a jeho fungovania. V druhej polovici teoretickej časti práce opisujem problematiku optimálnej kapitálovej štruktúry, kde sa zameriavam predovšetkým na náklady na cudzí a vlastný kapitál. Náklady na kapitál sú priblížené prostredníctvom ukazovateľa WACC a náklady na vlastný kapitál zvlášť za pomoci modelu CAPM. Na základe aplikácie teoretických poznatkov na vybranom podniku, som finančnou analýzou došla k záveru, že mnou vybraná spoločnosť dosahuje nevyhovujúcich hodnôt v oblasti likvidity a zadlženosti. Spoločnosť je zadlžená na 69%, čo znamená, že sa pohybuje v okolí kritických hodnôt. Ukazovateľ WACC ukázal, že priemerné náklady na kapitál dosahujú hodnotu 5,81%. Výpočet ukazovateľa úrokového krytia preukázal, že spoločnosť je v súčasnosti schopná splácať svoje nákladové úroky približne 480 krát. Krivka indiferencie ukazuje, že skutočný EBIT sa nachádza pod bodom indiferencie, a preto by podnik nemal ďalej zvyšovať podiel cudzích zdrojov, nakoľko by to mohlo mať negatívny vplyv na oblasť rentability. V návrhovej časti sú spracované všetky poznatky, ktoré som získala prostredníctvom tejto práce a zároveň navrhujem možné zmeny, ktoré by viedli k optimalizácii kapitálovej štruktúry. Za najvhodnejšiu variantu považujem zníženie podielu cudzích zdrojov na 50%, čím by spoločnosť dosiahla aj nižších priemerných nákladov na kapitál.
