Transformations of carnival: Folk culture and present day

Abstract:

Masopustní veselí mělo již od středověku své nezastupitelné místo mezi lidovými tradicemi a zvyklostmi a dotvářelo tak obraz každoročního života na vsi; jako mnohé další, i tento obyčej ale pozvolna z českého venkova mizí. Tato práce nahlíží masopust jako kulturní fenomén, jehož kořeny sahají hluboko do lidové kultury, pokouší se jej teoreticky vymezit, porovnat jeho dřívější podobu s tím, jak se masopust na vybraných místech slaví dnes, a ukázat, do jakých odvětví kultury principy masopustu sublimovaly. Hlavním cílem této práce je pak snaha zodpovědět otázku, zda přispěním moderní kultury skutečně nastává konec masopustu.

Abstract:

Carnival belongs to the most ancient festivities, it played an important role in the life of czech countryside; however, in the last few decades carnival seems to be losing it’s power and is slowly disappearing from folk culture. This thesis views carnival as a cultural phenomenon which is deeply rooted in the folk culture, tries to define it, compare it’s former state with how it is celebrated nowadays, and show how many of it’s principles seeped in and transformed into popular culture. The aim of this thesis is also to answer the question whether we really are at the end of the carnival.
