Solving the Puzzle: An Analysis of P. Craig Russell’s Graphic Novel Adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Coraline

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je prozkoumat proces adaptace románu prostřednictvím analýzy grafického románu P. Craiga Russella adaptující Coraline, dětskou novelu od Neila Gaimana. V úvodní části je představen nezbytný kontext, včetně definice grafického románu, se kterým tato esej pracuje, vzniku Coraline a historie spolupráce autorů, a stručného shrnutí příběhu. Analytická část poté zkoumá studie teorie komiksů a adaptací a společně s rozhovory s P. Craigem Russellem využívá svých nálezů v analýze jeho adaptace Coraline a snaží se zjistit, kde se jeho interpretace liší od Gaimanova původního díla a jaké možné důvody mohou za těmito změnami být.

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to explore the process of adapting a novel by examining P. Craig Russell’s graphic novel adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s children’s novella, Coraline. The introductory part lays out the necessary context, including the definition of the graphic novel that the thesis draws on, the authors’ history of collaborative work, and a summary of the novel’s plot. The analytical part then examines studies into comics and adaptation and with the help of P. Craig Russell’s interviews it applies its findings in the analysis of his adaptation of Coraline and examine where it differs from the original and what possible reasons may have motivated such departures.
