Comparison of the development of living standard in the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic in the years 1993-2018

Abstract:

Cílem práce je komparace vývoje životní úrovně v České republice a Slovenské republice v letech 1993-2018 na základě vybraných ukazatelů a verifikovat hypotézu, že v průběhu let se Slovensku daří dohánět životní úroveň České republiky, vůči které zaostává. V teoretické části autor nejdříve popisuje společnou historii a uvádí téma do historických souvislostí. Zaměřuje se na teoretické koncepty životní úrovně a dále definuje jednotlivé ukazatele, a tedy HDP na obyvatele, nezaměstnanost, inflace, index lidského rozvoje, index ekonomické svobody, střední délka života, kojenecká úmrtnost a počet osobních automobilů. Praktická část je rozdělena na dvě časová období, v kterých autor popisuje a analyzuje vývoj jednotlivých ukazatelů v jednotlivých zemích a ty zároveň vzájemně komparuje. Životní úroveň v obou státech v tomto sledovaném období významně vzrostla a na základě dostupných dat se hypotézu podařilo verifikovat pouze pro některé ukazatele, jelikož v mnohých z nich si vedla lépe Česká republika.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to compare the development of standards of living in the Czech republic and the Slovak republic between the years 1993 and 2018 on the basis of selected indicators and also to verify the hypothesis, that the Slovak Republic is succeeding in catching up to the higher standard of living in the Czech Republic. In the theoretical part of the thesis the author first describes the common history of the two states and introduces the historical context of the topic. The author then focuses on theoretical concepts of standard of living and also defines the individual indicators of standard of living, which are GDP per capita, unemployment, inflation, the human development index, the economic freedom index, life expectancy, infant mortality and number of personal vehicles. The practical part of the thesis is divided into two time frames, in which the author analyses the development of individual indicators in both countries, which the author then compares. The standard of living during the reference period has improved significantly in both countries and based on the available data the hypothesis was verified only for some of the mentioned indicators, because in many of the indicators the Czech republic has fared better.
