Development of the cycling infrastructure of the city of Plzeň

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá možnosti a realitu rozvoje cyklistické infrastruktury v Plzni. Předkládá vize města Plzně, Plzeňského kraje a neziskových organizací zabývajících se tvorbou cyklistické infrastruktury a podporou městské cyklistiky. Stručně přibližuje historii cyklistiky ve městech a vývoj užívání bicyklu jako městského dopravního prostředku. Popisuje vliv využívání jízdních kol na vzhled měst a městské infrastruktury a zabývá se kulturně-společenskými dopady na její uživatele. Výzkum prováděný pomocí rozhovorů s klíčovými aktéry rozvoje městské cyklistiky v Plzni se věnuje vnímání a využívání cykloinfrastruktury ve městě, zkoumá názory a argumenty tvůrců a aktivních uživatelů infrastruktury pro cyklisty. Práce se zabývá také stavbou stezek a spoluúčastí konkrétních firem (např. Škoda) na podpoře cyklistiky a propojení s veřejnými projekty typu Do práce na kole.

Abstract:

The thesis examines the possibilities and realities of the development of cycling infrastructure in Pilsen. It presents visions of the city of Pilsen, the Pilsen region and non-profit organisations dealing with the creation of cycling infrastructure and support for utility cycling. The theoretical part summarises the brief history of cycling in cities and the development of bicycle use as a city transport vehicle. It describes the impact of the use of bicycles on the appearance of cities and urban infrastructure and deals with the cultural and social implications for its users. The research conducted through interviews with key players in the development of urban cycling in Pilsen focuses on the perception and use of the cycling infrastructure in Pilsen. It examines the views and arguments of the creators and active users of new developement of cycling infrastructure. The thesis also deals with the construction of new cycling paths and the participation of specific companies (e.g. Škoda) in public cycling projects as "By bike to work".
