German translations of the Königinhof manuscript and their relationship to the style of epic poetry by Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué.

Abstract:

The goal of this bachelor thesis is to shed light on the connection between Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué and Václav Alois Svoboda’s German translation of the Königinhofer manuscript (also called the Queen’s Court Manuscript). The author’s conclusion shows that stylistic, ideological, social and historical similarities as well as personal sympathies for Svoboda explain Fouqué’s positive reception. A contribution to the explanation of the literary and social success of the Manuscript and to the explanation of Fouqué’s loss of popularity is made via the idea of myth. There is also a small subchapter dedicated to Richard Wagner and his indirect relationship with Fouqué. Finally, the thesis is presented that Fouqué interpreted these allegedly medieval Old Czech poems in 1822 as long-forgotten works which have been cast aside for similar reasons as his own. This work challenges, among other things, the common conception of Fouqué as an overly naive person who was wholly unaware of the social conditions of his time, but also wishes to contribute to the rediscovery of him as an author whose works do not deserve to be forgotten among the other more popular writers of German Romanticism.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je objasnění vztahu mezi Friedrichem de la Motte Fouqué a německým překladem Rukopisu královedvorského od Václava Aloise Svobody. Závěr autora ukazuje, že stylistické, ideologické, sociální, historické podobnosti a osobní sympatie k Svobodovi vysvětlují Fouquého pozitivní přijetí rukopisu. Zároveň se jedná o příspěvek, který myšlenkou „mýtu“ navrhuje vysvětlení literárního a sociálního úspěchu rukopisu stejně jako úpadku Fouquého popularity. K dispozici je také krátká podkapitola věnována Richardu Wagnerovi a jeho nepřímému vztahu k Fouquému. Ke konci je prezentována teze, že Fouqué tyto údajně středověké a staročeské básně v roce 1822 interpretuje jako zapomenuté dílo, které bylo ponecháno osudu z podobných důvodů jako jeho vlastní. Tato práce zpochybňuje mimo jiné populární představu Fouquého jako příliš naivního člověka, který si zcela neuvědomoval sociální podmínky své doby, ale také by chtěla přispět k jeho znovuobjevení jako autora, jehož dílo si nezaslouží být zapomenuto mezi ostatními, populárnějšími osobnostmi německého romantismu.
