Securing cryptographic implementations against advanced attackers

Abstract:

Kryptografie zajišťuje kritické aspekty společnosti. Bez ohledu na to, zda ji používá informátor v represivním režimu v aplikaci pro zasílání zpráv s šifrováním end-to-end nebo uživatel platící za produkt online. Oba tito uživatelé mají předpoklady důvěrnosti, integrity a autenticity, které jsou částečně poskytovány kryptografií implementovanou v softwaru a hardwaru. Kryptografie je komplikovaná, spojuje aspekty teorie informace, algebry a teorie čísel do primitiv, protokolů a systémů. Kryptografická primitiva se jen zřídka teoreticky prolomí, přičemž zabezpečení kryptosystému RSA je stále silné proti klasickým počítačům desítky let po jeho zavedení, zatímco jejich implementace se ukazují být zranitelné mnohem častěji. Tyto teze dizertační práce se zaměřují na zabezpečení kryptografických implementací proti pokročilým útočníkům a pokrývají širokou škálu implementačních problémů. Představujeme objev skupiny zranitelností v implementacích podepisování ECDSA. Studujeme testování prvočíselnosti na black-box zařízeních v nepříznivém prostředí a ukazujeme, že chybí ověření doménových parametrů. Sjednotili jsme několik útoků postranními kanály na ECDH, což nám umožňuje použít je obecněji. Studujeme názory a zkušenosti vývojářů kryptografických knihoven s timing útoky a nástroji pro ověřování odolnosti proti těmto útokům. Nakonec představujeme plány a probíhající výzkum v směrech reverzního inženýrství kryptografických implementací, analýzy prostředí bezpečnostních certifikací nebo studium použitelnosti nástrojů pro ověřování odolnosti proti timing útokům.

Abstract:

Cryptography secures critical aspects of society. Whether used by a whistle-blower under a repressive regime in an end-to-end encrypted messaging application or a user paying for a product online. Both of these users have assumptions of confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity, which are provided in part by cryptography implemented in software and hardware. Cryptography is complicated, combining aspects of information theory, algebra, and number theory to form primitives, protocols, and systems. Cryptographic primitives rarely break in theory, with the security of the RSA cryptosystem still strong against classical computers decades after its introduction, while their implementations break much more often. This thesis proposal focuses on securing those cryptographic implementations against advanced attackers, and covers a wide range of implementation issues. We present a discovery of a group of timing attack vulnerabilities in implementations of ECDSA signing. We study primality testing on black-box devices in an adversarial setting, finding that domain parameter validation is lacking. We unify several side-channel attacks on ECDH, which allows us to mount them more generally. We study the views and experiences of cryptographic library developers towards timing attacks and tools for verification of constant-timeness. Finally, we present plans and ongoing research into the directions of reverse-engineering of cryptographic implementations, analyzing security certifications landscape, or studying the usability of constant-timeness analysis tools.
