Behaviour of bats in hibernacula with white-nose syndrom

Abstract:

V rešeršní části práce se zaměřuji především na nové poznatky o WNS, které byly publikované až po sepsání mé bakalářské práce. Nechybí ale základní charakteristika onemocnění a shrnutí poznatků o hibernaci. Zjistilo se, že stanovení prevalence původce WNS Pseudogymnoascus destructans na základě vizuální kontroly je naprosto nedostačující (JANICKI et al., 2015). Začala se využívat přesná UV metoda pro diagnózu WNS (TURNER et al., 2014). Byly objeveny nové způsoby šíření onemocnění, a to přes ektoparazity (LUČAN et al., 2016), a byla potvrzena možnost šíření nemoci přes substrát na zimovištích (REYNOLDS et al., 2015). V druhé části práce jsem vyhodnotil velké množství dat z monitoringu termálního profilu zim 2012/13 a 2013/14. Monitoring proběhl ve Štolách pod Jelení cestou (Jeseníky) a v Kateřinské jeskyni (Moravský kras) na druhu Myotis myotis. V průběhu hibernace byly zjištěny dva typy událostí – události související s ohřátím jedince či skupiny netopýrů vedoucí k normotermii (normotermické události) a pohyb za nízké tělesné teploty. Události za nízké tělesné teploty jsou tvořeny vyšší motorickou aktivitou netopýrů (přesun, odlet, přílet) bez ohřátí nad teplotu okolí (povrchová teplota srsti < 5⁰C). Tato výrazná aktivita bez tepelné změny mění dosavadní náhled na hibernaci a zpochybňuje doposud používanou metodiku, při které se aktivní netopýr určuje podle dosaženého ohřátí. Většina normotermických událostí (58%) délkou nepřesáhla 1,5 hodiny. Normotermické události byly však delší (median= 80 minut) než události za nízké tělesné teploty (median= 20 minut). Normotermické události nebyly s koncem zimy častější, jak je charakteristické u netopýrů trpících WNS v Severní Americe. Na rozdíl od předešlých prací nebyla zjištěna jednoznačná synchronizace normotermických událostí se západem slunce. Počet netopýrů ve shluku pozitivně koreloval s přítomností kaskádového efektu na obou lokalitách. Na obou lokalitách byly vizuálně zjištěny významně odlišné prevalence porostu Pseudogymnoascus destructans. V průběhu víceletého výzkumu, doplněném histopatologickým vyšetřením netopýrů trpících WNS, se ukázalo vhodnější využívat nově vyvinutou UV metodu. Ta však potvrdila podobná poškození křídel u netopýrů nemocných WNS na obou lokalitách. Jednotlivé lokality se významně lišily mezi sezónami v maximálních teplotách za událost. Také byly objeveny rozdíly v délce normotermických událostí mezi sezónami ve Štolách pod Jelení cestou. Významné rozdíly v délce událostí i maximálních teplotách za normotermickou událost při podobné prevalenci WNS naznačují, že zde působí jiný faktor. Specifické mikroklima společně s hibernačními zvyky populací netopýrů velkých, kteří využívají obě lokality, budou pro dynamiku termálního profilu zimujících jedinců patrně důležitější než variabilita v onemocnění WNS.

Abstract:

At the beginning of this thesis I am mainly concentrating on new findings regarding WNS, which were published after finishing my bachelor thesis. Basic characterizations of the disease and hibernation are also included. It was found out that prevalence of WNS agent Pseudogymnoascus destructans based on the visual surveys is absolutely inadequate (JANICKI et al., 2015). New UV method for WNS diagnosis was putted to use (TURNER et al., 2014). New spreading possibilities of WNS were discovered, for instance via ectoparasites (LUČAN et al., 2016). And it was confirmed that disease can be also spread via substrate in hibernaculas (REYNOLDS et al., 2015). In the second part I evaluated large amount of data from two winters long (2012/13 and 2013/14) thermal monitoring. Monitoring took place in Štoly pod Jelení cestou (Jeseníky) and in Kateřinská jeskyně (Moravský kras) on the species Myotis myotis During hibernation we distinguish two kinds of events – events related to warmed individual or group of bats leading to normothermia (normothermic events) and movements at low body temperature. Events at low body temperature are composed of higher motoric activity (relocation, departure, arrival) without exceeding the ambient temperature (temperature of the fur surface< 5⁰C). This significant activity without thermal rising is changing our current view on hibernation and dispute so far used methodology, in which is active bat recognized based on the reached temperature. Majority of normothermic events (58%) did not exceed 1.5 hours. Normothermic events were longer (median= 80 minutes) than events at low body temperature (median= 20 minutes). Normothermic events were not more abundant at the end of the winter, as it is common in North American bats that are affected by WNS. We were not able to find clear synchronization of normothermic events with dusk as previous studies did. The number of bats in the cluster positively correlated with the number of cascades on both locations. Based on visual surveys the two locations had significantly different prevalence of Pseudogymnoascus destructans. During this long research, accompanied with histopathological testing, it was found out, that UV method is more efficient. Results of UV method showed no significant difference between locations in severity of wing damage. Both locations were significantly different in maximum temperatures during events between winters. Normothermic events were significantly different in duration between winters on the location Štoly pod Jelení cestou. These significant differences in durations of events and maximum temperatures with similar prevalence of WNS are suggesting that there is another factor included. Specific microclimate and hibernation habits of bat populations on both locations influence thermal profile of hibernating bats probably more than variability in impact of WNS disease.
