Attitudes of psychology master's students towards trans* people

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá postoji magisterských studentů psychologie k trans* lidem. V teoretické části práce je rozebírán gender skrze jeho tři hlavní složky – genderovou identitu, vyjádření pohlaví a anatomické pohlaví. Je popsán i vztah k sexuální orientaci, a jednotlivé genderové identity s vysvětlením pojmu cisgender a transgender. Podstatná je kapitola týkající se duševního zdraví trans* lidí. Na postoje práce pohlíží skrze koncept koloběhu útlaku. Popisuje stereotypy i předsudky a zaměřuje se na redukci negativních postojů skrze edukaci. Empirická část obsahuje kvantitativní výzkum zaměřený na mapování postojů magisterských studentů psychologie k trans* lidem v České republice. Postoje byly měřeny skrze škálu genderismu a transfobie (GTS scale). Výsledky prokázaly postoje neutrální až mírně negativní (žádná až mírná úroveň transfobie), kdy v průměru mírně kladnější postoje byly u cis žen než u cis mužů (tento rozdíl však nebyl statisticky významný). Statisticky významný se prokázav vztah, kdy respondenti s méně negativními postoji vůči trans* lidem vykazovali nižší spokojenost s mírou edukace ohledně LGBTQIA+ tématiky.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the attitudes of master students of psychology towards trans* people. In the theoretical part of the thesis, gender is analyzed through its three main components – gender identity, gender expression and anatomical sex. The connection with sexual orientation, and individual gender identities are also described. The terms cisgender and transgender are explained. Essential is the chapter about mental health of trans* people. The attitudes of work are viewed through the concept of the cycle of oppression. Thesis describes stereotypes and prejudices and focuses on reducing negative attitudes through education. The empirical part contains quantitative research focused on mapping the attitudes of master students of psychology towards trans* people in the Czech Republic. Attitudes were measured through the GTS scale. The results showed neutral to slightly negative attitudes (no to moderate level of transphobia), with slightly more positive attitudes on average in cis women than in cis men (although this difference was not statistically significant). Statistically significant was the relationship where respondents with less negative attitudes towards trans* people showed lower satisfaction with the level of education about LGBTQIA+ topics.
