Stereotypical assumptions about mental capacities of persons with serious handicap

Abstract:

This thesis deals with creating and modifying stereotypes towards individuals with physical disabilities in the Czech and the Slovak society. According to the interview and the participant observations author studied stereotyped conceptions in three research groups: people without physical disabilities establish contact with people with physical disabilities very rarely, people without physical disabilities, who come into contact with people with physical disabilities very often – members of their families, assistants, friends and in the third research group are people with physical disabilities. This thesis sets a task not only to search forming of the stereotypes but also to ascertain the affect of the increasing time spent with people with physical disabilities on people without physical disabilities. It also detects impacts of the stereotyped conceptions on peoples´ without learning disabilities self-conception and their conception on other stigmatized individuals (people with learning difficulties). The last goal is to explore how people with physical disabilities deal with stigmatized events. According to commonly shared cultural meanings, stereotyped conceptions are shareable by all members of the society. In spite of stereotypes impression to be the unchangeable facts, the personal experience has the possibility to modify them.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa venuje problematike vytvárania a premeny stereotypov voči osobám s ťažkým telesným postihnutím v slovenskej a českej spoločnosti. Na základe interview a zúčastneného pozorovania autorka stereotypné predstavy zmapovala v troch výskumných skupinách výskumných, ľudí bez zdravotného postihnutia, ktorí prichádzajú do kontaktu s osobami s ťažkým telesným postihnutím iba minimálne, ľudí bez zdravotného postihnutia, ktorí sú s osobou s ťažkým telesným postihnutím v častom kontakte – členovia ich rodín, asistenti, priatelia a tretiu skupinu tvoria osoby s ťažkým telesným postihnutím. Táto práca si za cieľ vytýčila nie len vytváranie stereotypov predstaviť, ale i zistiť, aký má na nich vplyv zvyšujúca sa doba, strávená s osobami s ťažkým telesným postihnutím, aké sú dopady stereotypných predstáv ľudí bez zdravotného postihnutia na seba-ponímanie ľudí s ťažkým telesným postihnutím a ich ponímanie na iné stigmatizované osoby (osoby s mentálnym postihnutím) a ako osoby s ťažkým telesným postihnutím reagujú na stigmatizujúcu udalosť. Vzhľadom ku všeobecne zdieľaným kultúrnym významom, sú stereotypné predstavy zdieľané všetkými členmi spoločnosti. Napriek tomu, že stereotypy pôsobia ako nemenné fakty, osobná skúsenosť ich má možnosť modifikovať.
