Women and leadership: conscious and unconscious barriers in women's career growth

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá tématem vědomých a nevědomých bariér v kariérním růstu žen. Jejím cílem je zjistit, zda existují bariéry v kariérním růstu žen a jaké jsou potenciální možnosti jejich odstranění. Jedním z dílčích cílů, je pak tyto bariéry identifikovat. V rámci další výzkumné otázky je snaha zjistit, zda mají muži a ženy nevědomé předpojatosti vůči ženám v leaderských pozicích, které by následně mohly mít vliv na jejich chování a rozhodování. Práce je doplněna o řadu statistických údajů a studií mapujících rovnost žen a mužů na trhu práce. Teoretická část dále vymezuje pojem leadershipu a trendů v této oblasti, ale především se zaměřuje na postavení a vnímání žen v řídících pozicích. Empirickou část práce tvoří výzkum kvalitativní povahy, skládající se z testu implicitních asociací, dotazníkového šetření a případových studií. Zaměření studií cílí na problematiku „skleněného stropu“ a „nastávajícího mateřství“, jako potvrzených limitací v kariérním postupu žen a jejich zastoupení v řídících funkcích.

Abstract:

This master thesis deals with the topic of conscious and unconscious barriers in women`s career growth. The main objective is to determine whether there are any barriers women face in their career growth. This paper identifies these barriers and suggests how they might be removed. Another key research aim is to determine whether men and women are unconsciously prejudiced towards women in leadership positions, which could subsequently influence their conscious behaviour and decision-making. The master thesis analyses statistical data and a number of studies mapping the equality between women and men in the labour market. The theoretical part further defines the concept of leadership and trends in the area, but mainly focuses on the position and perception of women in managing positions. The empirical part is qualitative in nature and consists of an implicit association test, a questionnaire survey and two case studies. The case studies focus on the issues of “glass ceiling” and “expectant motherhood”, which have been shown to limit women`s career advancement and their representation in management positions.
