Concepts for the architectural designs of art museums between 1950-1970s.

Abstract:

Práce zkoumá vybraná vývojově zvláště důležitá muzea 50.–70. let 20. století z po-hledu teoretického a praktického. Teoretická rovina se zabývá ideovými koncepty vzniku muzeí. V praktické rovině je centrálním bodem uvažování flexibilita výstav-ního prostoru a kontakt vystavených děl s návštěvníkem v kontextu tohoto prosto-ru. Na začátku je ve speciálním exkurzu představena problematika prostorové flexi-bility a její vývoj v rámci výstavní architektury během 20. století. Hlavní oddíl práce je dělen na kapitoly podle daných muzeí. U každého muzea bude v teoretické části pojednáno o pozadí jeho vzniku a ideových předpokladech, které vedly jeho tvůrce k určitým konceptům. V praktické části je popsán exteriér a interiér budovy muzea s přihlédnutím k možnostem expozice ve výstavním prostoru. Dále jsou zhodnocené problematické momenty spojené s vystavováním umění v daném prostoru. Důleži-tou složkou této části bude analýza a shrnutí zpětné vazby návštěvníků, což poskyt-ne reálný pohled na skutečnou komunikaci muzea s návštěvníkem. V závěrečném oddílu jsou v rámci architektonické typologie muzeí představena hodnocení disku-tovaných staveb z koncepčního hlediska, jejich místa ve vývoji muzejní architektury a otevřenosti vůči návštěvníkovi.

Abstract:

The thesis examines selected museums of particular developmental importance in the 1950s – 1970s from theoretical and practical perspectives. The theoretical level deals with the ideo-logical concepts of the genesis of museums. On the practical le-vel, the central point of consideration is the flexibility of the exhibition space and the contact of the exhibited works with the visitor in the context of this space. At the beginning, in a special excursus, the issue of spatial flexibility and its development within exhibition architecture during the 20th century is introduced. The main section of the thesis is divided into chapters according to the museums in question. For each museum, the theoretical section will discuss the background of the muse-um's creation and the ideological assumptions that led its creators to certain con-cepts. In the practical part, the exterior and interior of the museum building is described, taking into account the possibilities of the exhibition space. In addition, the problematic moments associated with exhibiting art in the given space are eva-luated. An important component of this part will be the analysis and the summary of the visitors’ feedback, which will provide a real insight into the actual communicati-on between the museum and the visitor. In the final section, an architectural typolo-gy of museums is presented to evaluate the buildings discussed from a conceptual point of view, their place in the evolution of museum architecture and their open-ness to the visitor.
