Experimental Possibilities in Individual Differences Research: Spatial Orientation in Immersive Virtual Reality

Abstract:

Jak již je známo z předchozích výzkumů, mezi lidmi existují nesporné rozdíly ve způsobech chápání prostoru. Smyslem tohoto výzkumu je uchopit některé existující koncepty a iterovat na nich ve virtuálním prostředí (vzhledem k tomu, že předchozí poznatky byly zjištěny převážně v reálných kontextech, z důvodu tehdejších technologických omezení). Kromě otázky inter-individuálních rozdílů se tu též skýtá možnost explorace na intra-individuální rovině: tedy, jak data sesbíraná ve virtuálních prostředí korespondují se svými reálnými protějšky. Nicméně, primární cíl této studie spočívá v exploraci, a následné implementaci úloh zaměřeních na vizuální kognitivní styly do virtuální reality, ve smyslu kolekce a interpretace dat; širokosáhlá empirická šetření nejsou záměrem práce (je zmíněno pouze několik vybraných případů). Předpokládá se však, že v budoucnu, po zpracování tohoto explorativního šetření může na empirickou studii dojít. Co se konkrétních technologií týče, bude využito eye-trackingu a path-trackingu v detailním virtuálním prostředí. Tato studie je též technologickou výzvou. Jedná se o relativně nově nasazené technologie, jež postrádají hotová řešení užití; a ačkoliv se snaha o implementaci těchto technologií může zdát jako něco, co leží mimo zájem psychologie, je třeba si uvědomit, že vyřešení těchto doprovodných problémů může otevírat nové perspektivy a rozšiřovat možnosti výzkumu. Krom toho, je třeba vzít v potaz, že kognice prostoru i k ní přidružené psychické procesy mohou při užití těchto technologií (řeč je např. o virtuální realitě) vykazovat jisté odlišnosti oproti běžným podmínkám -- což je také dílčí otázkou, kterou má smysl se zabývat.

Abstract:

As already clarified by previous studies, there are individual differences in ways people make sense of their spatial surroundings. The purpose of this study is to take some of the known concepts and iterate on them in the virtual environment (as the majority of the previous body of work was done in real environments and without the use of tools such as eye-tracking, due to technological constraints of the past). Beyond the inter-individual differences in visual cognition, there's also a question of intra-individual comparison to be answered -- i.e. interpreting how the virtual-collected and real-collected data relate one to the other. However, the prime focus of this study lies in exploring, considering, and implementing visual cognition theory-relate tasks into a virtual solution; empirical findings, in a sense of analyzing collections of data and drawing conclusions from them, are not the key point here (only few specific cases are mentioned); the study, however, proposes a way of concluding such future empirical findings. Technology-wise (and in addition to the standard questionnaire/interview data collection approaches), this research uses eye-tracking and path-tracking in a fully immersive virtual environment. This study is also a technological challenge. The (combinations of) technologies used in the research are new and thus not streamlined; and while the task of their implementation may seem to fall off the scope of psychological research, the success of solving these challenges can provide new perspectives and allow for new areas of research possibilities. Also, as aforementioned, experiential aspects of these technologies, such as spatial cognition in virtual reality, may differ from what we are ordinarily accustomed to -- making this a question worth exploring.
