Language barrier in providing medical care at Karvina region (Karvinsko)

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou jazykové bariéry při poskytování zdravotní péče na Karvinsku. Protože je tento region charakteristický svým zeměpisným a historickým postavením ve spojení se sousedním Polskem a výskytem těžkého průmyslu, vzniká zde multijazykové prostředí se zvýšenou potřebou poskytování zdravotní péče. V rámci své praxe se můžou zdravotničtí pracovníci setkávat s pacienty, kteří mluví jiným jazykem než česky. Vlivem těchto skutečností může vznikat jazykové bariéra při komunikaci mezi zdravotnickými pracovníky, kteří poskytují zdravotní péči a pacienty. Tato práce je rozdělená na teoretickou a praktickou část. Teoretickou část tvoří historické souvislosti s regionem Karvinska, charakteristika obyvatelstva podle struktury národnosti a cizinců, vybrané kategorie národností a etnik z hlediska jazykové a kulturní odlišnosti, dále pak problematiku zdravotní péče o cizince z hlediska interpretace zákona. Definuje základní pojmy v oblasti komunikativní a jazykové bariéry při poskytování zdravotní péče. Praktickou část tvoří anonymní dotazníkové šetření u zdravotnických pracovníků, s cílem zmapovat možný vliv jazykové bariéry na poskytování zdravotní péče ve vybraných nemocnicích v regionu. Dílčím cílem je zjištění, jak dalece je vnímán problém jazykové bariéry u lékařských a nelékařských profesí a v souvislosti s věkem zdravotnických pracovníků.

Abstract:

This work deals with the issues of the language barrier when providing the health care in the district of Karviná. This district is typical because of its geographical location and historical background connected with the nighbour Poland and also due to the heavy industry. For this reason, there is an increased need of providing the health care in the multilingual environment. The medical workers can meet patients who speak other languages than the Czech one in their working practice. Under these circumstances there can be the language barrier in communication between the health workers and the patiens. This work consists of two parts ? the teoretical and the practical one. The teoretical parts deals with the historical context in the district of Karviná, the characteristics of the population according to the structure of the nationalities and ethnic groups from the language and cultural distinction viewpoint, and finally faces the problems of providing health care for foreigners according to the law interpretation. It defines the basic terms in the sphere of the communicative and language barrier when providing the heath care. The practical part contains an anonymous questionnaire filled in the health workers with the aim to map the possible influence of the language barrier on granting the health care in some selected hospitals in the district. One partial goal is to find out how the langure barrier is perceived by the medical and non-medical professionals concerning the age of the medical workers.
