Thermal properties of polymeric materials

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se v prvních třech kapitolách, které tvoří teoretickou část práce, postupně zabývá základními vlastnostmi a dělením polymerních materiálů dle několika kritérií, vlastnostmi těchto materiálů a jejich změnami následkem tepelných účinků, a měřicími metodami, pomocí kterých lze tyto změny ve vlastnostech analyzovat. V poslední kapitole pak práce zahrnuje měření teplotních vlastností vybraných polymerních materiálů, jehož cílem bylo na vzorcích ze skupiny termoplastů, reaktoplastů a elastomerů poukázat na rozdíly ve vlastnostech mezi těmito materiály za použití metod diferenciální skenovací kalorimetrie (DSC), simultánní teplotní analýzy (STA), termomechanické a dynamické mechanické analýzy (TMA, DMA), které jsou popsány v teoretické části práce. Předpokladem bylo, že u vzorku semikrystalického termoplastu měla být patrná výrazná změna tepelného toku a modulu elasticity v oblastech skelného přechodu, krystalizace a tavení. Druhý vzorek, patřící do skupiny reaktoplastů, měl takovouto změnu vykazovat pouze v oblasti skelného přechodu, jelikož ke krystalizaci ani k tavení z důvodu amorfního charakteru v tomto případě nedochází. Třetím vzorkem byl termoplastický elastomer, jehož chování mělo být podobné jako tomu mělo být u termoplastu s tím rozdílem, že fázové přechody se v tomto případě měly vyskytovat ve velmi nízkých teplotách. Výsledky DSC a STA potvrzují stanovené předpoklady vycházející z teoretické části práce s výjimkou vzorku elastomeru, kde se ve zvoleném teplotním rozsahu nepodařilo zachytit skelný přechod. Ten se při měření mechanickými metodami podařilo zachytit metodou DMA, která se ukázala jako nejcitlivější. Kombinací zvolených metod se tak podařilo změřit teploty fázových přechodů všech tří vzorků, poukázat tak na základní rozdíly mezi jednotlivými druhy polymerů a následně vysvětlit jejich příčiny.

Abstract:

In the theoretical part of the work, which consists of first three chapters, this bachelor's thesis deals with the elementary properties and the division of polymer materials according to several criteria, the properties of these materials and their changes due to thermal effects applied to them, and measurement methods that can be used to analyze these changes in properties respectively. In the last chapter, the work includes the measurement of the thermal properties of selected polymer materials, the purpose of which was to point out the differences in properties between these materials on samples from the group of thermoplastics, thermosets and elastomers using the methods of differential scanning calorimetry, simultaneous thermal analysis, and static and dynamic thermomechanical analysis, which are described in the theoretical part of the thesis. It was assumed that a significant change in the heat flow and modulus of elasticity in the areas of the glass transition, crystallization and melting should be observable for the sample of semi-crystalline thermoplastic. The second sample, being representative of thermosets, should have shown such a change only around the glass transition area, since neither crystallization nor melting occurs due to the amorphous nature in this case. The third sample was a thermoplastic elastomer whose behavior was supposed to be similar to that of a thermoplastic, with the difference that the phase transitions in this case were to occur at very low temperatures. The DSC and STA results confirm the established assumptions based on the theoretical part of the work, with the exception of the elastomer sample, where the glass transition was not captured due to the selected temperature range. During the measurement by mechanical methods, the latter was captured by the DMA method, which proved to be the most sensitive. By combining the chosen methods, it was possible to measure the phase transition temperatures of all three samples, thus pointing to the basic differences between the individual types of polymers and subsequently explaining their causes.
