Translating Comics

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá překladem komiksu a problémy spojenými s tímto procesem. Komiks je často definován jako literární žánr a není mu překladovou teorií věnována dostatečná pozornost. Aby bylo možné zabývat se aspekty spojenými s překládáním komiksu, je třeba definovat komiks jako médium se specifickými aspekty, které komiks řadí na stejnou úroveň ostatních médií, jakými jsou literatura nebo film. Tyto aspekty jsou v práci popsány společně se způsoby, jaké komiks využívá ke komunikaci se čtenářem a historií a vývojem média komiksu. Práce dále mapuje historii českého komiksu a popisuje současný status komiksu v České republice. Zároveň je popsána historie publikování zahraničních komiksů a současná strategie vydavatelství ve výběru titulů. Třetí kapitola tvoří jádro celé práce a zabývá se problémy spojenými s překládáním komiksu. Neomezuje se však pouze na textovou část komiksu, ale i na ostatní části tohoto média (například obrazovou stránku, která má v komiksu narativní funkci), které je třeba vzít při překládání v úvahu a dokládá tyto problémy vybranými příklady z rozdílných komiksových publikací vydaných v České republice. Popsány jsou rovněž překladatelské problémy spojené výhradně s médiem komiksu (onomatopoeia atd.) a důvody, proč je třeba vzít tyto problémy v úvahu během překládání komiksových děl.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with translating comics and with the problems connected with this process. Comics are often defined as a genre of literature and they are not described by translation studies properly. To be able to analyse problems connected with translating comics, it is necessary to define comics as a medium with aspects which are unique for comics and witch make comics a medium just as literature or film. Not only these aspects are described in the thesis, but also the way how comics communicate with the reader and history of comics and their development. The history of Czech comics and comics in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic and current status of comics in the Czech Republic. The thesis also describes the history of publishing foreign comcis in the Czech Republic and the policy of Czech publishers. The third chapter is a core of this thesis and deals with the problems connected with translating comics. However, it does not deal only with the textual material of comics, but also with other parts (for example, the visual part which has narrative function as well) which have to be taken into consideration during the process of translation and provides examples from various comic books translated into Czech. Problems connected exclusively with the translating comics (onomatopoeia etc.) and reasons why they have to be taken into consideration during the process of translation are also described.
