Elena Poniatowska and Mexico: Between literary fiction and historical construction

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the literary work of the Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska that oscillates between fiction and historical construction. The objective of this work is to analyze it, link it with Mexican literature, history and society of the 20th century and compare it with the ?official version?. In the theoretical part, the development of Mexican literature of the 20th century and testimonial literature, the biography, work and style of Elena Poniatowska and the concept of otherness following Octavio Paz will be addressed. Likewise, we provide the official version of the events or characters that appear in three writer's books: Here's to you, Jesusa!, Massacre in Tlatelolco and Dear Diego. In the practical part, these books will be analyzed, their degree of fiction and historicity and the author's intervention will be reviewed, and the facts mentioned in the theoretical part will be seen from a new point of view: through the voices of the silenced, of the outcasts.

Abstract:

Esta tesis trata sobre la obra de la escritora mexicana Elena Poniatowska que oscila entre la ficción y la construcción histórica. El objetivo de este trabajo es analizarla, enlazarla con la literatura, historia y sociedad mexicana del siglo XX y compararla con la ?versión oficial?. En la parte teórica se abordará el desarrollo de la literatura mexicana del siglo XX y de la literatura testimonial, la biografía, obra y estilo de Elena Poniatowska y el concepto de otredad siguiendo a Octavio Paz. Asimismo, se brindará la versión oficial de los acontecimientos o personajes que aparecen en tres obras de la escritora: Hasta no verte, Jesús mío; La noche de Tlatelolco: testimonios de historia oral y Querido Diego, te abraza Quiela. En la parte práctica se analizarán estas obras, se revisará su grado de ficción e historicidad y la intervención de la autora y se abordarán los hechos mencionados en la parte teórica desde un nuevo punto de vista: a través de las voces de los silenciados, de los marginados.
