The Transition from Boyhood to Manhood: Experience of Males during Emerging Adulthood

Abstract:

Dříve byl přerod chlapce v muže spojován s řadou iniciačních zkoušek, které si žádaly průvodce v podobě starších mužů. V moderní společnosti se tyto rituály plošně nevyskytují. Mladí muži jsou tak ve formování mužské identity odkázáni na vlastní vklad a dostupné zdroje. Ocitají se v přechodovém období, někde „mezi“ chlapectvím a mužstvím, které je klíčové pro položení základů jejich maskulinity a lze jej situovat do etapy vynořující se dospělosti. Psychický přerod chlapců v muže je též podrobně rozpracován v teorii čtyř maskulinních archetypů, přičemž na prahu dospělosti je největší význam přikládán působení archetypu Válečníka. Cílem práce bylo hlouběji porozumět subjektivním zkušenostem mladých mužů s přechodovým obdobím, jejich společným aspektům a subjektivnímu významu archetypu Válečníka. Byl zvolen kvalitativní design, do vzorku zahrnuti tři respondenti ve věku 18-20 let z úplné rodiny, studující vysokou školu. Polostrukturované rozhovory byly analyzovány pomocí metody interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy (IPA). U všech respondentů byla vypracována podrobná analýza jejich zkušenosti, a to na obsahové, lingvistické a konceptuální úrovni. U každého respondenta vznikl individuální seznam kódů a kategorií, který posloužil jako kostra pro zprostředkování vhledu do jeho zkušenosti. Analytický rozbor vyústil v popis následujících skutečností souvisejících s přechodovým obdobím: subjektivní pojetí chlapectví a mužství; aspekty a dynamika této zkušenosti; subjektivní pojetí archetypu Válečníka a jeho význam ve zkušenosti. V závěru byla témata analýzy srovnána s důrazem na jejich společné aspekty.

Abstract:

In the past, the transition from boy to a man was associated with a series of initiating trials which required guides in the form of elder men. These rituals are not widely present in modern society. Because of that, young men are left to their own contribution and available resources when forming their adult male identity. They find themselves in transition period, somewhere amidst boyhood and manhood. This period is crucial for laying foundations of their masculinity, and it can be situated in the stage of emerging adulthood. Psychological transformation of boys to men is elaborated in the theory of four masculine archetypes. On the verge of adulthood, the most prominent archetype is the Warrior. The aim of the thesis is to better understand the subjective experience of young men with their transition period, the mutual aspects, and the subjective meaning of the Warrior archetype. The qualitative research design was chosen. The research sample consists of three participants in the age of 18-20 years, coming from complete family and studying at university. The semi-structured interviews were examined using the interpretative phenomenological analysis method (IPA). In-depth analysis of each participant’s experience was conducted on the descriptive, linguistic and conceptual level. Individual list of codes and categories emerged from each interview; it served as the foundation of insight into the experience. The analysis resulted into description of following themes associated with transition period: subjective interpretation of boyhood and manhood; aspects and dynamics of this experience; subjective understanding of the Warrior archetype and its meaning within the experience. Finally, the themes were compared with the emphasis on the mutual aspects.
