The knowledge and the attitudes of parents to dental care in children under 3 years

Abstract:

Cíl: Cílem práce bylo zjistit úroveň znalostí a postojů rodičů v péči o chrup u dětí do tří let v souvislosti s věkem, stupněm jejich vzdělání a zdravotnickým vzděláním. Metodika: Data k výzkumu byla shromažďovaná pomocí kvantitativní dotazníkové metody. Pro naši práci byl použit nestandardizovaný dotazník převzatý z mezinárodní studie od autorů Abdulrahman Alshehri a V. S. Nasim. Sběr dat byl proveden v období od května do října 2016, na třech dětských odděleních, konkrétně ve Fakultní nemocnici Ostrava, Městské nemocnici Ostrava a Slezské nemocnici v Opavě. Dotazník byl určen rodičům všech dětí ve věku 1-3 let, hospitalizovaných společně na dětském oddělení jedné z výše vyjmenovaných nemocnic. Sledovaný soubor tvořilo 130 rodičů. Výsledky: Z průzkumného šetření vyplynulo, že rodiče námi sledovaného vzorku populace, mají v průměru 73 % znalostí týkající se péče o zuby u dětí do 3 let, a 80 % rodičů ukázalo pozitivní postoj k této problematice. Dále jsme došli k závěru, že věk rodičů nehraje důležitou roli v úrovni znalostí, ale může ovlivňovat jejich postoje. Také bylo zjištěno, že rodiče s vyšším stupněm vzdělání, mají vyšší úroveň znalostí i pozitivnější postoje v péči o zuby u svých dětí. Statisticky zanedbatelný rozdíl byl zaznamenán mezi úrovní znalostí a zdravotnickým vzděláním rodičů, kde rodiče s jakoukoliv úrovní zdravotnického vzdělání došli k o něco lepším znalostním výsledkům. U rodiče se zdravotnickým vzděláním byl zjištěn také pozitivnější postoj k péči o zuby u dětí. Závěr: Postoje k péči o chrup u dětí a znalosti rodičů o orálním zdraví významně souvisí s výskytem zubního kazu u dětí, proto je nezbytné kojeneckému zdraví dutiny ústní (IOH - Infant oral health) věnovat více pozornosti a zvyšovat jeho podvědomí u rodičů.

Abstract:

Objective: The aim of the thesis was to find out the level of knowledge of and attitudes of parents to the oral care of children up to 3 years of age and classify it in the relation to their age, received education and health education. Methodology: The data for the research were collected by quantitative survey methods. An unstandardized questionnaire from the international study by Abdulrahman Alshehri and V. S. Nasim was used for our paper. The collection of data was carried out in the period from May to October 2016 at three hospital departments for children, specifically in the University Hospital in Ostrava, City Hospital Ostrava and Silesian Hospital in Opava. The questionnaire was designed for parents of children aged 1-3 years hospitalized together at the department for children in one of the above mentioned hospitals. The group comprised of 130 parents. Results: The survey showed that the parents in the reference sample of the population have 73 % of knowledge concerning the oral care for children up to 3 years on average and 80 % of parents showed a positive attitude toward this issue. We have reached the conclusion that the age of parents does not play an important role concerning the level of knowledge but it can influence their attitude. It was also found out that parents with higher education have higher level of knowledge and more positive attitude towards the oral care of their children. Statistically insignificant difference was observed when comparing the level of knowledge and health education of parents, parents with high level of health education scored a bit higher. For parent with medical education a more positive attitude towards the oral care of children was also found out. Conclusion: The attitudes to the oral care of children and the knowledge of parents on the health of the oral cavity is meaningfully connected with the emergence of tooth decay of children and that is why it is necessary to pay more attention on the health of the oral cavity of infants (IOH - Infant oral health) and increase parents' knowledge about it.
