Does the Climate Matter? Discourse Network Analysis of Climate Delayism in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Spolu s vývojem debat na téma klimatické změny a s ní spojených opatřeních, se vyvíjí i potřeba rozpoznat narativy, které zúčastněné strany v komunikaci používají. Koncept klimatické změny se postupně přenáší z vědecké oblasti a stává se součástí veřejných a politických debat. Pařížská dohoda a z ní vyplývající závazky a podněty směrem k dekarbonizaci a transformaci energetiky různým způsobem ovlivnily veřejné vnímání problematiky, a rozdělily společnost do několika názorových skupin, jejichž postoje jsou artikulovány skrze média. Česká republika, ekonomicky založená na uhlí a fosilních palivech, není v tomto ohledu výjimkou. Tato práce se zaměřuje na odhalení diskurzních koalic vznikajících v rámci debaty o změně klimatu v České republice, s důrazem na fenomén klimatického zpožďování. Cílem práce je pomocí diskurzní analýzy odhalit přítomnost konceptů klimatického zpožďování v diskurzu, spolu s identifikací aktérů a diskurzních koalic artikulujících tyto koncepty v médiích.

Abstract:

As debates about climate change and climate action are evolving, the need to recognize the narratives of both sides of the debate is rising. The concept of climate change has been gradually translating from the field of science into public and political debates. The Paris Agreement and following steps towards decarbonisation and energy transition influenced the public perception on climate action differently in vari-ous ways, often dividing the society into several opinion streams, fur-ther articulated through the media. The Czech Republic with its coal-based economy is no exception. This work focuses on revealing the discourse coalitions emerging within the climate change debate in the Czech Republic with the main focus on the notion of climate delayism. With the focus on the discursive layer, the aim is to reveal the pres-ence of climate delayism concepts in the discourse, together with iden-tification of actors and possible coalitions articulating these concepts in the media.
