Foreign direct investments in context of convergence/divergence of the countries of the Visegrad four.

Abstract:

Hlavním účelem práce je zhodnotit vliv přímých zahraničních investic na konvergenci/divergencizemí Visegradské čtyřky k EU15. Část rešerše obsahuje nezbytnéteoretické poznatky včetně souhrnu empirických studí zabývajících se vlivem PZIna ekonomický růst. V první části empirické analýzy je pomocí modelu beta-konvergence zjištěna konvergence daných zemí na sledovaném období 1995-2015.Odhad je proveden pomocí OLS. Výsledkem je úspěšná konvergence V4 k EU15.Následně je vliv PZI na proces konvergence zhodnocen pomocí analýzy ekonomickéhorůstu za stejné období. Postupně zde byly aplikovány 4 různě složitémodely panelových dat. Využité metody jsou hromadné OLS a metoda pevnýchefektů. V posledním modelu byl zkoumaný vzorek zemí rozšířen o zbývající tranzitivníekonomiky EU. Výsledkem analýzy je prokázání významného pozitivního vlivuPZI na ekonomický růst tranzitivních ekonomik, což je jedna ze zkoumanýchhypotéz této práce. Na vzorku zemí, obsahujícím pouze V4, se mi významný pozitivnívliv prokázat nepodařilo. Nakonec jsou výsledky obou analýz zasazeny dovzájemného kontextu a jsou formulována doporučení tvůrcům hospodářské politiky.

Abstract:

Aim of this thesis is to evaluate impact of foreign direct investments on convergence/divergenceof the Visegrad four to EU15. Theoretical part contains necessaryknowledge to execute this evaluation and includes review of empirical researchemployed with impact of FDI on economic growth. In first part of empiricalanalysis beta-convergence model is used to discover convergence of observed countriesduring period 1995-2015. Estimation uses OLS regression. The results showsuccessful convergence of V4 to EU15.Afterwards there is analysis of impact of FDI on economic growth for the sameperiod. Four models with escalating difficulty were used to evaluate this impact byusing panel data regression. Pooled OLS and fixed effects are methods used in thisregression. In the last model, more EU transition countries are included to confirmone of investigated hypotheses. Results of this analysis show significant and positiveimpact of FDI on economic growth in EU transitive economies. Using only V4countries, I did not find out this impact to be significant. At last, all results areevaluated and given to mutual context. Recommendations to economic policymakers are included as well.
