Sociopolitical causes of state failure: case study of Lebanon

Abstract:

Tato práce pomocí analytického rámce organizace Fund for Peace, Failed States Indexu, hodnotí faktory, které vedou k selhání státu v případ Libanonu. Práce se snaží zodpovědět, zda lze odlišit faktory, které bývají zmiňovány jako inherentní příčiny slabosti Libanonu, což je zejména konfesní systém jako základ dělby moci a zda se objevují i další faktory slabosti státu, které nesouvisí s těmito inherentními příčinami. Dochází k závěru, že kromě těchto „tradičních“ faktorů slabosti státu je v současné době zatěžován systém veřejných služeb a že přispívajícími faktory slabosti státu je i regionální situace, zejména konflikt v Sýrii, díky kterému čelí Libanon náporu uprchlíků. Komunita syrských uprchlíků může představovat značný tlak na stát v případě, že by se začala radikalizovat

Abstract:

This thesis aims to analyze factors that lead to state failure in the case of Lebanon. To this end the thesis builds upon the Fund for Peace´s Failed States Index. The main focus of the thesis is to answer the quaetion whether we can distinguish between causes of sate failure that are mentioned as inherent atributes of state failure in Lebanon like confessional systém of power haring and wether thera are some other fators that lead to the weakening of the state, which are not associated to the inhrenet causes of state failure. The conclusion presented in this theis is that apart from the „traditional“ factors of state failure in Lebanon there are other factors, especially pressures to the public services. The factor that especially further contribute to state failure is also the current situation in the region, especially conflict in Syria whch leads to dramatical inrease in number of refugees.
