Limits of Fiction and Communicability of Jan Gogola's Situation of the Street

Abstract:

Tato práce je neoformalistickou analýzou filmu Národ sobě aneb České moře v osmácti přílivech, autorského díla Jana Gogoly ml. z roku 2003. Film byl vybrán jednak pro jeho netypické distribuční osudy, hlavně pak pro jeho nevšední formu. Dvě hlavní kapitoly práce jsou věnovány právě ekonomickému kontextu a estetickým specifikům filmu. První část je podkladem pro neoformalistickou analýzu. Vychází z principů knihy Film History. Theory and Practice Roberta C. Allena a Douglase Gomeryho a popisuje vznik filmu od autorského přístupu a detailů produkčního procesu, přes distribuční neúspěch a alternativní distribuci, k divácké recepci, kritické reflexi a propagaci filmu. Práce se také snaží o vytyčení skupiny podobných děl v kontextu české filmové produkce. Samotná neoformalistická analýza je založena na přístupu Kristin Thompsonové a Davida Bordwella; základní literaturou jsou jejich knihy Breaking the Glass Armor. Neoformalist Film Analysis a Film Art. An Introduction. Analýza vychází z odmítavých reakcí diváků a potenciálních distributorů snímku, přičemž se zaměřuje na rysy stylistického systému, na rušivé sebereflexivní prvky, rozrušenou naraci a nakonec zkoumá prvky, které filmovou formu sjednocují. Práci uzavírá definice řídícího principu filmové formy: protikladná tendence rozrušování divákovy pozornosti působí zároveň se sjednocujícím kompozičním pnutím, které vede k porozumění významům filmu. Jak se podotýká v závěru práce, důvodem distribučního neúspěchu Národu sobě je to, že většina diváků zůstane na první úrovni neporozumění a rozrušeného vnímání, a není pak schopná nalézt významy ve filmu obsažené.

Abstract:

This is an analysis of Czech film Národ sobě aneb České moře v osmnácti přílivech (Situation of the Street or the Czech Sea in the 18 Tidal Waves), authorial piece of work of Jan Gogola Jr. from 2003. The chosen film has interesting distribution background: despite it has been made like long footage film for distribution in the cinemas it has never been in classical distribution, mainly because of its very specific form. Two parts of the analysis deal with these economic and aesthetic features of the film. The first part of this analysis is a study of economical and cultural context of Národ sobě. This part is based on principles of the book Film history. Theory and practice written by Robert C. Allen and Douglas Gomery and it explores an evolution of the film from original ideas of authors and details of production process, through a failure of distribution and its alternative distribution, to the audience’s reception, reflexion of the critique and a propagation of the film. At last it tries to describe a group of similar films in the context of Czech film production too. The second part is a film analysis based on principles of neoformalist film theory of Kristin Thompson and David Bordwell. Two books of these authors are the basic literature for this analysis: Breaking the Glass Armor. Neoformalist Film Analysis and Film Art. An Introduction. Starting point of this analysis is the refusing reaction of the film’s spectators and its potential distributors. The analysis tries to find reasons for it in the structure of the film. Different elements of the film form are explored here: at first attention deals with the features of film stylistic system, than with disturbing self reflexive elements. An analysis of disrupt narration follows. Finally analysis explore the elements which unity the film form and give meanings to the spectator. The analysis concludes with defining of the leading principle of the film form: the antagonistic tendency of disturbing a spectator’s attention and, in the same time, uniting compositional tension which leads to understanding of film’s meanings. The reason of distribution failure of Národ sobě is that most of spectators stay on the first level of incomprehension and disrupt perception and they can’t find the meaning in the film.
