Thematic Analysis of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughter-house Five and Timequake

Abstract:

The present study analyzes the themes of two novels by Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five and Timequake. Slaughterhause-Five is Vonnegut?s best-known work and it was published for the first time in 1969. Timequake is Vonnegut?s last novel and it was published for the first time almost thirty years later, in 1997. Both novels share the use of the sci-fi motif of time travel and the character called Kilgore Trout, a fictional science-fiction writer. The books are frequently compared with each other in the study, but it is argued that they share most of their themes and differ rather in the way in which these themes are treated in each book. The topics are grouped into four groups, War, Society, Religion, and Art and Science. Attention is also paid, especially in the case of Slaughterhouse-Five, to certain unusual formal methods used in the novels.

Abstract:

V této práci jsou analyzována témata románů Kurta Vonneguta Jatka č. 5 a Časotřesení. Jatka č. 5 jsou Vonnegutovým nejznámějším dílem a byla poprvé vydána roku 1969. Časotřesení je Vonnegutův poslední román, byl vydán poprvé téměř o třicet let později, roku 1997. Oba romány sdílejí použití sci-fi motivu cestování časem a postavu Kilgora Trouta, fiktivního autora science fiction. Knihy jsou v práci často srovnávány, práce se však pokouší ukázat, že většinu témat sdílejí a liší se spíše způsobem jejich zpracování. Témata jsou seskupena do čtyř okruhů: válka společnost, náboženství, umění a věda. Pozornost je též věnována, zejména v případě Jatek č. 5, určitým nezvyklým formálním rysům těchto románů.
