The Perception and Teaching of the German Language in Bohemia after 1918 in the Historical Context of German-Czech Relations

Abstract:

German-Czech relations are a topic which is not only very important in the history of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia, but also still gives rise to questions which must be answered and discussed. For many people this part of our history is seen as a delicate topic, which, in spite of the democracy of both countries, is viewed as schism obstructing an objective dialog. On the one hand, this thesis intends to discuss the perception and the teaching of the German language in Bohemia mostly in the context of the after-war period, and on the other hand to present the historical context of German-Czech relations. In the relatively short history of our country we can distinguish several time periods, in which the usage and the position of the German language can be judged. This will form the basis of the material for this thesis. Thus, not only will the relations between the two countries be examined, but also the language as a fact of the community of Germans and Czechs, which lasted several centuries. This thesis intends not only to present historical facts, but also to objectively describe the times, as they were experienced by people who witnessed them personally. The final results presented in the summary are meant to evaluate, confirm or reject the theories presented at the beginning of this thesis.

Abstract:

Česko-německé vztahy jsou nepochybně tématem, které nejen že v historii Čech, Moravy a Slezska zaujímají významné místo, ale které také nastolují otázky, kterými je potřeba se i v dnešní době zabývat. Taktéž německý jazyk a jeho výuka je s historií naší země úzce spjata. Tato práce pod názvem Pojetí a výuka německého jazyka v Čechách po roce 1918 v historickém kontextu česko – německých vztahů, se zabývá vnímáním a výukou němčiny, především v obdobích let 1918, 1938 a 1968. Jedním z cílů této práce je, popsat historické události česko-německých vztahů výše uvedených období, které měly vliv na postavení, výuku a pojetí němčiny, především v Čechách. Na základě zpracování této historické části a za asistence soudobých svědků, kteří byli formou rozhovoru do práce zapojeni, bude analyzováno, zda a jaký vliv měly tyto zásadní události na německý jazyk a jeho chápání českou společností. Práce se sestává ze tří hlavních kapitol. V první se autor zaměřuje na historické události, které měly vliv na postavení německého jazyka. Druhá část se zaměřuje zejména na výuku němčiny ve vztahu k tehdejšímu vládnímu uspořádání. Třetí část je pak zpracována na základě rozhovorů očitých svědků. V závěru práce se autor zaměřuje na vyhodnocení hypotéz a domněnek, které byly stanoveny v úvodu.
