Intercultural and intracultural romantic relationships in emerging adulthood: The search for differences in commitment, satisfaction, investment, quality of alternatives, and sensation seeking

Abstract:

Studie se zabývá srovnáním interkulturních a intrakulturních partnerských vztahů mladých lidí v období vynořující se dospělosti (N = 379). Zkoumány byly možné rozdíly v míře spokojenosti, kvalitě alternativ, investic, závazku a sensation seeking a dále byla také zjišťována jejich vzájemná souvislost. U jedinců v interkulturních a intrakulturních partnerstvích nebyly prokázány rozdíly v míře spokojenosti, kvality alternativ, investic ani závazku. Podařilo se však ověřit, že existují rozdíly v míře sensation seeking. Jak ženy, tak muži v interkulturních partnerstvích mají vyšší míru sensation seeking než lidé v intrakulturních vztazích. Mezi mírou spokojenosti, kvalitou alternativ, investic, závazku a sensation seeking nebyl nalezen žádný vztah. Výsledky studie přispívají k snížení obecně sdílené představy o tom, že interkulturní partnerství jsou méně funkční než partnerství intrakulturní a rovněž naznačují, že sensation seeking nemusí být nutně charakteristikou, která je pro partnerský vztah neadaptivní.

Abstract:

This study focused on intercultural romantic relationhip comparing to intracultural romantic relationship among emerging adults (N=379). The relationship between intercultural and intracultural relationship's satisfaction, quality of alternatives, investment, commitment, and sensation seeking was examined. No differences were found in relationship satisfaction, quality of alternatives, investment, and commitment. However, individuals in intercultural relationships reported significantly higher level of sensation seeking compared to those in intracultural relationships. Further, the relationship between relationship satisfaction, quality of alternatives, investment, commitment, and sensation seeking was examined and no relationship was not found. This investigation indicates that intercultural relationships are not less funcitonal and with more problems than intracultural relationships and proposes that sensation seeking might be not only an unadaptive charakteristic in romantic relationship as well.
