Comparison of the performance of fund strategies based on value and index investments

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou výkonností fondů zaměřených na hodnotové a indexové investiční strategie. Cílem práce je porovnat tyto dvě investiční strategie na příkladu vybraných fondů od největších správců aktiv a zjistit, jestli má běžný retailový investor možnost dosahovat vyšších než průměrných výnosů investicí do hodnotově zaměřených fondů. Analýza výkonnosti fondů byla provedena pomocí moderních metod měření výkonnosti fondů. Konkrétně byl využit Sharpeův index, Treynorův index a Jensenova metoda. Fondy byly také porovnány z pohledu výnosnosti, rizikovosti nebo nákladovosti. Analýza je doplněna pohledem na portfolia fondů a hlavní hodnotové a finanční ukazatele, pomocí nichž byly odhaleny možné příčiny podvýkonnosti hodnotových fondů vůči indexu S&P 500. Nejvýkonnějším z fondů byl zástupce indexové investiční strategie, burzovně obchodovaný fond kopírující americký index S&P 500. Žádný z vybraných hodnotových fondů nedokázal překonat tento fond a hodnotová investiční strategie realizovaná vybranými fondy se tedy ukázala jako méně výkonná.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the issue of fund performance focused on value and index investment strategies. The aim of this work is to compare these two investment strategies on the example of selected funds from the largest asset managers and determine whether an average retail investor is able to achieve higher than average returns on investments in value-oriented funds. The analysis of fund performance was performed using modern methods of measuring fund performance. Namely, the Sharpe index, the Treynor index and the Jensen method were used. Funds were also compared in terms of profitability, risk or cost. The analysis is supplemented by an assessment of funds portfolios and the main value and financial indicators, which revealed possible causes of underperformance of value funds against the S&P 500 index. None of the other evaluated funds failed to outperform this fund and the value investment strategy implemented by the selected funds thus proved to be less efficient.
