Subjective perception of parental educational style and experienced autonomy in early adulthood

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je hlubší porozumění možným souvislostem mezi subjektivně vnímaným rodinným výchovným stylem a prožívanou mírou autonomie v období mladší dospělosti. Studie je založena na principech kvalitativního výzkumu. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo osm respondentů ve věku 21-25 let. Data byla získána prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s respondenty, v rámci nichž byl zjišťován subjektivně vnímaný rodinný výchovný styl, který respondentům rodiče poskytli, dále vnímání vlastní dospělosti a prožívaná míra autonomie v různých oblastech lidského života. Dle výsledků výzkumu, respondenti, jež vnímají rodinný výchovný styl jako poskytující jim velkou míru volnosti, pociťují vysokou míru autonomie v různých oblastech svého života, výjimku většinou tvoří finanční autonomie či bydlení s rodiči. Sami se za dospělé nicméně zatím nepovažují. Respondenti, kteří vnímají rodinný výchovný styl jako omezující a neposkytující jim dostatečné množství svobody, pociťovali v dětství malou míru autonomie, tato autonomie ale v průběhu přechodu ze střední školy na školu vysokou vzrostla, kde se jako podstatný faktor podle respondentů jeví i partnerský vztah, jež nárůstu autonomie napomohl.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to better understand potential connections between subjectively perceived parental educational style and experienced autonomy in early adulthood. This study is based on the principles of qualitative research. The sample was represented by eight respondents at the age of 21-25. The data were collected by means of semi-structured interviews with respondents; these interviews tried to find out parental educational style as subjectively perceived by the respondents as well as their perception of their own adulthood and experienced degree of autonomy in various areas of human life. According to the results of the research the respondents who perceive parental educational style as offering great amount of freedom experience high degree of autonomy in various areas of their lives with the exception of financial autonomy and living with parents. However, they do not perceive themselves as adults. Respondents who perceive parental educational style as restrictive and not providing enough freedom experienced lower degree of autonomy in childhood. Nevertheless, this autonomy increased during the transition from secondary school to university. According to the respondents’ statements, an important factor seemed to be partnership which helped to increase their autonomy.
