Unconventional Woman: Maggie Tulliver in Eliot’s Mill on the Floss

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá postavením nekonvenční hrdinky ve Viktoriánské Británii se zaměřením na hlavní hrdinku Maggie Tulliver v románu George Eliot The Mill on the Floss. Pomocí textové analýzy práce zkoumá represivní prostředí pro nekonvenční mladou ženu ve Viktoriánské době společně s jejími neúspěšnými pokusy zapadnout do role ideální viktoriánské ženy. Úvodní část práce uvádí hlavní cíl práce a zároveň některá zajímavá fakta z autorčina života, která prokazují významnou shodu s hlavní hrdinkou Maggie Tulliver. Hlavní kapitoly práce se věnují protichůdným ženským a mužským genderovým rolím se zaměřením na Maggie Tulliver a její mužské protějšky. Závěr práce je věnován tragickému charakteru románu, který vrcholí smrtí hlavní hrdinky a jejího bratra Toma.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis deals with role of unconventional heroine in Victorian Britain with focus on Maggie Tulliver in George Eliot’s most autobiographical novel The Mill on the Floss. Using the textual analysis the thesis explores the oppressive environement for unconventional woman in Victorian Era together with the heroine’s unsuccessful attempts to fit the ideal of Victorian woman. The introductory part states the main objective of the thesis as well as some interesting facts of the author’s life, which shows significant similarities with heroine Maggie Tulliver. The main chapters of the thesis deal with conflicting male and female gender roles and with focus on Maggie Tulliver and her male counterparts – Tom Tulliver, Philip Wakem and Stephen Guest. The final chapter uncovers the tragic character of the novel, which climax is the death of Maggie Tulliver and her brother Tom.
