Behavioural synchronisation in cervids

Abstract:

K synchronizace chování dochází mezi dvěma a více jedinci, vykonávajícími ve stejný čas stejnou aktivitu. Tématem synchronizace chování se zabývá mnoho současných studií. Jedná se tak o atraktivní téma behaviorální biologie, zejména kvůli absenci mnoha informací, kvůli kterým je potřeba provádět další výzkumy. Synchronizace chování je typická zejména pro zvířata, žijící ve skupinách, jelikož přináší jejich členům mnohé výhody. Ukazuje se, že díky synchronizaci aktivit se ve skupině udržuje její soudružnost, jedinci získávají ochranu před predátory, prodlužuje se délka strávených aktivit. Kromě synchronizace aktivit hraje roli také časový rozvrh jelenovitých. Ten je pro jedince důležitý kvůli vyrovnávání energetických rezerv. Každý jedinec má určité nároky na to, jak dlouho a s jakou frekvencí potřebuje danou aktivitu vykonávat. Cílem této práce bylo otestovat pět hypotéz, týkajících se synchronizace chování, délky a frekvence aktivit: zda dominance ovlivňuje délku strávených aktivit a jejich frekvenci (1), zda má stáří jedinců vliv na délku a frekvenci aktivit (2), vliv velikosti skupiny na délce aktivit (3), zda je odpočinek a žraní synchronizován víc, než náhodně (4) a závislost délky a frekvence aktivit na laktačním stavu samic (5). Pozorování probíhalo v Zoo Ostrava od března do září roku 2020, u stád jelena milu (Elaphurus davidianu), wapiti sibiřského (Cervus canadensis sibiricus) a siky vietnamského (Cervus nippon pseudaxis). Vycházelo se z 207 zaznamenaných hodin na základě kterých došlo k vyhodnocení synchronizace odpočinku a synchronizace žraní. Díky dostatečnému množství dat byla do práce následně zařazena také délka odpočinku, délka žraní, frekvence odpočinku a frekvence žraní těchto stád. Výsledky ukázaly, že hierarchické postavení dospělých samic má vliv na délku odpočinku. Dominantnější samice odpočívaly déle než samice submisivní. Naopak u frekvence odpočinku dospělých samic se dominance neukázala jako významná. To může naznačovat, že samice synchronizují odpočinek stejně často, pouze s rozdílnou délkou. Dále se ukázalo, že subadultní jedinci odpočívali déle, než dospělci i mláďata a stejně tak nejdéle a nejčastěji žrali. Pro naplnění svých energetických nároků potřebují subadulti přijímat větší množství potravy a odpočívat delší dobu, než mláďata či dospělci. Toto zjištění také naznačuje, že synchronizace aktivit mezi dospělci a mláďaty je vyšší než synchronizace se subadultními jedinci. S rostoucím počtem členů ve skupině se zvyšovala délka jejich odpočinku. Naopak na délku žraní neměl počet členů ve skupině vliv. Vliv velikosti skupiny by bylo vhodné ověřit u většího vzorku stád každého druhu.Zkoumány byly také délky a frekvence aktivit pouze mezi dospělými samicemi, kde vyšlo najevo, že laktující i nelaktující samice odpočívají v rámci stáda stejně často a stejně často žerou. V délce žraní dospělých samic v závislosti na jejich laktačním stavu se rovněž neukázaly rozdíly. Za těmito výsledky může být to, že dospělé samice synchronizují tato chování v takové míře, že se větší rozdíly nepotvrzují. V neposlední řadě se vyšlo najevo, že laktující samice odpočívají kratší dobu než nelaktující. Kratší doba odpočinku u laktujících samic byla nejspíše způsobena potřebou kojení jejich mláďat. Tato práce přináší nové poznatky o synchronizaci žraní a odpočinku jelenovitých. Ukázalo se totiž, že všechna pozorována stáda synchronizují odpočinek a stejně tak synchronizují žraní, což dosud u těchto druhů nebylo prokázáno.

Abstract:

Behavioral synchronization occurs between two or more individuals performing the same activity at the same time. Many current studies have addressed the topic of behavioral synchronization. It is an attractive topic in behavioral biology, especially due to the absence of much information, which requires further researches. Behavioral synchronization is especially typical for animals living in groups, as it brings many benefits to their members. It turns out that thanks to the synchronization of activities, cohesion is maintained in the group, individuals gain protection from predators, and the duration of activities increases. In addition to the synchronization of activities, the time budget of deer also plays a role. It is important for individuals for balancing energy reserves. Individual have certain demands on how long and with what frequency he needs to perform a given activity. The aim of this work was to test five hypotheses concerning the synchronization of behavior and time budget od activities: whether dominance affects the length of activities spent and their frequency (1), whether the age of individuals affects the duration of activities and activity bouts (2), the effect of group size on the duration of activities and activity bouts (3), whether are resting and foraging synchronized more than randomly (4) and the dependence of duration and activity bouts on the lactation state of females (5). The observations took place in the zoological garden in the Ostrava from March to September 2020, in herds of Pere David's deer (Elaphurus davidianu), Siberian elk (Cervus canadensis sibiricus) and Vietnamese sika deer (Cervus nippon pseudaxis). Based on 207 hours of observation were evaluated synchronization of resting and synchronization of foraging. Thanks to enough data, there were also included time budget of foraging, resting and foraging bout as well as resting bout of this herds. The results showed that the hierarchical position of adult females influences the duration of resting. Dominant females rested longer than submissive females. In contrast, dominance did not appear to be significant in the resting bouts of adult females. This may indicate that females synchronize resting as often, only with duration differences. Furthermore, it turned out that subadults rested longer as well as forage and had higher foraging bouts than adults and fawns. To meet their energy needs, subadults need to forage more and rest longer than fawns or adults. This also suggests that synchronization of activities between adults and fawns is higher than synchronization with subadults. As the number of members in the group increased, the duration of resting increased. The duration of foraging was not affected by the number of members in the group. The effect of group size should be verified on a larger sample of herds of each species. The duration of activity and activity bouts only among adult females were also examined, where it turned out that both lactating and non-lactating females rest within the herd just as often and forage just as often. There were also no differences in the duration of foraging of adult females depending on their lactation status. Behind these results may be that adult females synchronize these behaviors to such an extent that larger differences are not confirmed. Finally, it turned out that lactating females rest shorter than non-lactating females. Lactating females had shorter period of resting probably due to the need to breastfeed their fawns. This diploma thesis brings new knowledge about the synchronization of foraging and synchronization of resting in deer. It turned out that all observed herds synchronize resting and foraging, which has not yet been proven in these species.
