The effect of need for cognitive closure on dogmatic behavior on the Internet

Abstract:

Práce se zaobírala vlivem potřeby kognitivního uzavřená na dogmatické chování v internetovém prostředí. Zjišťovala, jestli nejistota vyvolaná krátkým článkem na téma terorismu může vést ke zvýšení potřeby kognitivního uzavření a zároveň, jestli krátké vyjádření populární osobnosti může pomoci tuto potřebu uzavření naplnit, a tedy vést k chování, které lze označit jako dogmatické – tedy glorifikace vlastní skupiny a hostilní postoje vůči skupině cizí. Výzkum byl proveden na vzorku 150 studentů českých vysokých škol, kteří prošli celým internetovým dotazníkem a zároveň mu věnovali dostatek času. Tento dotazník se skládal z manipulace s nezávislou proměnnou potřeby kognitivního uzavření a dvou subtestů položek. První subtestů zahrnoval zkrácenou škálu potřeby kognitivního uzavření pro ověření účinnosti manipulace s ní. Druhý zahrnoval promíchané položky ze škál glorifikace vlastní skupiny, zde českého národa a hostility k cizí skupině, zde operacionalizované jako souhlas k tvrdší politice vůči teroristům a podezřelým z terorismu. V práci nepodařilo dostatečně ovlivnit potřebu kognitivního uzavření respondentů, a tedy se nepodařilo ověřit hypotetizované vztahy. Podařilo se ovšem ověřit existenci vztahu mezi rysem potřeby kognitivního uzavření a závislými proměnnými. Možné příčiny neúspěchu této manipulace a možnosti jejich nápravy jsou diskutovány v závěru práce, stejně tak jako doporučení pro další výzkum.

Abstract:

This thesis studied the influence of the need for cognitive closure on dogmatic behavior on the internet. The aim was to find out whether uncertainty caused by reading a short article on terrorism can lead to a deepened need for cognitive closure and at the same time, whether the short mention of popular personality can help fulfill this need for cognitive closure and therefore lead to behavior which can be described as dogmatic – in this case glorification ingroup and hostility towards outgroup. The research was conducted on sample of 150 students of Czech universities who took part in an internet questionnaire and devoted an appropriate amount of time to it. This questionnaire consisted of manipulation with an independent variable of need for cognitive closure and two subtests. The first subtest consisted of a shortened scale of need for cognitive closure for the verification of the effects of the manipulation. The second consisted of mixed items of scales of glorification of ingroup, in this case the Czech nation, and hostility towards outgroup, here operationalized as approval of a stricter policy on terrorists and those suspected of terrorism. The subjects' need for cognitive closure couldn't be influenced enough and therefore the hypothesized relations weren't supported. However, the relation between the trait of need for cognitive closure and dependent variables was successfully verified. The possible causes for the failure of the manipulation and the possibilities of correction are discussed in the conclusion of the thesis, as are recommendations for further research.
